Dude - you are an animal to even attempt something like that on a budget. My hat is off.

I had a 30' S-Type with surface drives. It ate my lunch. I am not very handy, though. The guy that has it now took it to Austria and is in the process of completely re-doing the boat. He even took the deck off and bonded it to the hull. I can't wait to see it when he is finished. I might have to go to Austria for that one.

keep pictures coming... I make money on selling 1998 to 2001 boats, and still don't understand why I like the trouble of redoing boats and hardly get my money back out of it, (without counting my time spent), But I like the final results and the boat by heart... Don't give up, and show pictures!

I blew the budget to hell when I pulled the first engine. I need to quit looking at boats for sale because I have found quite a few nice boats that are DONE for less than what I have in mine right now- and it's in a million pieces. I understand now why so many people get started on this stuff and never finish- every time I look at the thing I realize how big a mistake I made- but maybe, just maybe if I do the job right it might turn out ok.

Thanks to everyone for all the support- I am trying to figure out paint schemes right now so I am open to suggestions. I want to paint it all black like the new Miami Vice Donzi- but everyone tells me not to-opinions, suggestions? I also like the new Cigarette paint jobs- they have one I really like that is grey, blue, white and black-too many choices. :evilb:

Quit working on the boat completely and get a second job. Then pay someone else to do it. It still won't get done, but at least you have someone you can take your frustration out on. :evilb:

Just kidding. :D Good luck.

if you want to know something about it, just let me know. i am from austria and i am in austria, so likely i could get some information about that boat (and iŽd be curious who that guy is, anyway). so if you have a name or an address (pm me) i will happily look after that boat.
also, when exactly did it leave for austria? we have a guy with a 28 or 29 scarab here, but it doesnt have surface drives. its around for about 3 years.
we have re-done a 22 two years ago (also seperated hull and deck and so on, its in another thread "22 scarab re-rig"). the wood in these boats is crap, seems like older wellcrafts/scarabs werent built too carefully.

Scottie150,

I can't believe that is the same trailer! Can I ask you waht you paid to have it blasted and painted?

I'm redoing my trailer this winter... I want to install electronic brakes as well.

Thanks,

Tom

Re: 81 Scarab project from hell

Scarab22-1998- Blasting was $350, and paint and materials ran about $700 with labor included. You use a lot more paint on a trailer than something like a boat or a car because of all the areas you have to cover. Brakes were not that bad, I converted from surge to electric, parts were around $500 including the coupler. Where I got hosed was all the welding and metal work(rear tail section, fenders, coupler) and also the LED lights, man they don't give that stuff away. Hope this helps-

By the way- the brake work was easy- just plan on getting really dirty and good air tools!!!! :D

Currant photos after I got it back from the paint shop. Now I am waiting for the paint to cure before we can color sand and buff, and then apply all the graphics. I also need to sell some more blood to pay for everything.

The starboard engine starts and runs fine- however it has a exhaust leak on the side that is impossible to get to, so I have pretty much decided to yank that one too-seems like it would be easier to work on outside. The other thought is to take it and have it media blasted, my friends tell me there is a place in town that does Corvettes so it is ok on fiberglass, and for the cost of labor and sandpaper vs. just starting over it's almost a wash. Anybody got any thoughts on this or have you done it? I am going to try and pull the lower unit off the port drive to send it out to weld- so I will shoot some more photos tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the input!!! :D

i have used a 10lb sledgehammer to remove pistons that were stuck like that .060 will usually clean the bore up. good luk with it, id think about all new exhaust so it doesn't leak and ruin a fresh bullit. good luck with it, rm

I was looking for 4 years for that boat, and found 1. Where did you find this one?

Boat was in Edison, NJ. I was getting screwed but I loved the boat. Wound up buying a much nicer Stinger 390 for 1/2 the money. I don't know, I just love the old 80's Miami Vice boats.....

Very late reply...excuse me.. The 38KV in question is outside US.

Keep the faith, it is all worth when you take your friends out for their first ride. My twin brother and I got a 79 32 Excalibur in April 04 with all the headaches you have encountered. The same rusted seized engines and half a part. We got it in the water this year ran ok but not to right. just found out bent valves. 3/4 thru the season we smelled fuel in the bilge end up being the fuel tank. So in a couple of months will start that project. you might want to double check your tank. Good Luck

Just rebuilt my 1980 30' and have a few suggestions....
Replace the fuel tank now while you have it apart....Not an easy task but once it is out you gain access to all the stingers and you can refasten the floor the the stringers. Also if you have the teak deck i would seal it and build a floor...I did that to mine and it really tightened up the boat. Let me know if you want me to post pics of that. And finally if you are going to run center rise exhaust with the tru hull exhaust you are going to need to install 3" spacers. Also I made my 3" tips 4" tips so I did not have to install reducers. I HAVE ALL YOUR ANSWERS. My project from hell took a complete year.

Post away- I have been trying to get out there and work on it some more but I am not that motivated at 20 degrees. I haven't even been able to get it out to take some new photos of the new graphics. I would be very interested to see what you are talking about- as far as I know my stringers and hull are all solid- but I have been trying to figure out what to do with the teak- I don't really care for it and the direction I am taking the boat it won't match.

By the way- mine is over a year- my wife reminds me of that all the time!!!

scotie, looks good to me, i know first hand it's tough to keep going sometimes, but your almost there. We probably wont get our's back for a couple more months. If you have the teak floor like i did ,you could put plywood in its place and then put non slip tile over that. Ive seen a couple boats that way and it looked really nice. Brian

I don't consider myself cheap but that seems like an awful lot for what I need done. I also got the exhaust manifolds back and repainted them, and sent the intake manifold and engine mounts out to be stripped. I took some photos but I probably won't get them up until tonight.

AZ Lineman- yes, I think I am going to keep the arch- I think it kind of updates the boat a little bit. I am also thinking about getting rid of the glass and teak and do something different.

Look how mine was done. Carpeted over the teak, Cabinets were rebuilt in the cabin using corion, and paint everything else white.

jeff
PS. I added pic of boat in the water to keep you project guys motivated. March will be here soon.

Yes sandpaper is cheap. I started stripping a car once, that way, and 4 months later I still had to end up sending it to the blasting shop. $2200 is sheap when you start looking at how much time it will take.
:blaster:

EDIT,

Didn't realize how far behind I was. Nice paint job. Guess you gotit figured out.

Jeff-

Very, very nice job!!! If mine turns out half as good as yours I will be very happy. :evilb:

Is that your original windshield? We are currently in the mock up stage on mine(chopped it) but I can't decide if I want a black windshield or I should just build something like yours.

Actually the windshield is built out of aluminum. Has 1.5" angle frame around top and bottom. Flat 1/4" plate was welded around outside. Ground smooth, bondo and paint to match.

Also doesn't break when the fat ass climbs on to the bow.

Did your fuel tank take up all the space under the teak floor, and a bunch of space under the rear seat? I haven't looked that close at mine yet- but I thought it was only under the seat- but looking at yours I may be way wrong. When you reinstall the tank did you use blow in foam to help secure it? Any other tricks I should know about? Thanks, Scott

Re: 81 Scarab project from hell

The fuel tank does take up the the entire space from the cabin back to under the back seat....It is 7 or 8 ft long. When you pull it out it looks like a coffin. Once the new tank was in place I used 2 part pour in foam. Tricky stuff.
The main reason I got rid of the teak floor is because water would leak on top of the tank. Which caused the old foam to rot. NOTE: changing the fuel tank was one of the hardest tasks of the rebuild. Give me a call if you need details. It is a very tight fit. I had the new tank made to the same size only thicker. Also zinc primed and painted the tank to make it last another 25 years.
