Fuel sending unit???

Scottie150 - did you ever replace your fuel gauge sending unit? I had mine out this past weekend. The unit works great - I can cycle the sending unit from empty to a full tank. My problem is a float that won't float! I wonder if there are replacement floats available? I am a little concerned about whether or not I could get one of the Livorsi sending units into my fuel tank. Scarab has the access hole in the tank right below the rear seatback bulkhead. Pain in the butt to get the stock unit out of the tank!

Get a centroid unit.

http://www.centroidproducts.com/nintro.htm

Direct replacement for the old float type senders, no moving parts, and even built in water detection!

I have 2 and love them and cheap money too!

Thanks for the info! I called them today and need to check a couple of things on my boat before moving forward. Did you use the 2 or 3 wire sending unit?

I used the 3 wire units but only because I was rewiring both boats when I purchased them. In your case you should be fine with the two wire so it's a direct replacement. Did you find the list of instruments that the 2 wire unit was compatible with? If yours isnt listed then I wouldnt imagine it would be difficult to run a power wire from somewhere to the fuel sender.

No, not yet- I figure that's another project all to itself. I'm more focused on stupid little things like engines and trannys:rolleyes:

scottie150 08-14-2008 11:17 PM

Starboard engine started today- sounds really good, but I still have a leaky seawater pump. Anybody have any ideas where to get new ones without bending over?:angry-smiley-038:

Where is it leaking from? Where the case seperates? or is the housing cracked or something? I would imagine you can just buy a rebuild kit which should include new gaskets.

It looks like it is leaking from the where the case meets, but I can't tell. I have new impellors and housings, and it was leaking last year so I took them all apart and checked everything out- and I still cant get them to stop leaking. I have a nasty feeling the water is coming from the quad seal, which is the only part I didn't replace. Here is a dumb question- on the hose I have water flowing all the time, even when the engine is not running. Is that normal? Or should the water stop flowing when the engine isn't?

502ss 08-15-2008 10:20 AM

I am guessing you are testing all this out of the water right? So you have the water pickups plumbed into a garden hose or something. If the garden hose is on and the engine is not you will still get water leaking past the impeller, atleast thats been my experience, What I am not sure is if different pumps have different specifications so maybe some are designed not to let any water leak by. I did a few quick searches and a new pump is not cheap!

scottie150 08-18-2008 09:25 PM

Swapped out the seawater pump from the port engine(I'm getting really good at changing seawater pumps- swapped both pumps in less than 20 minutes in the dark) and finally got a run with no issues- no oil leaks, no water leaks, good oil pressure- there might be hope after all!!:ernaehrung004:

Also put the outdrive back on- so progress is being made. Delivered it to my friends for wiring, so if everything goes as planned I should get it back in the next week and get the other engine in- hopefully hit the water this year!!! Thanks everyone for the help!!

502- bought a new seawater pump- the quad seal was bad- and corroded so much there was no edge left for a new seal- so I was out of choices-

Good luck scottie150. I love your boat, wish I could hit the lottery to buy it.

I hope to see lots of pics when you hit the water. I've followed this thread for a long time and it's truly an inspiration.

If all goes well tomorrow- I might be able to get some video of it running on the trailer! I am going to try to get the port engine in and started- I just have to get a few more parts in the morning(new battery cable, couple of breathers, hopefully I get my carbs, etc.) If all goes well I will post up some video for all to see:evilb:

It won't be long.....:boat:

scottie150 08-27-2008 11:26 PM

So close- 1/4 inch in fact. The last exhaust pipe is 1/4 inch too long- so have to run it over to my buddies and cut it in the morning, get a couple of little things, etc. and should be able to light it off tomorrow after work. :evilb:

scottie150 08-28-2008 11:34 PM

Its official- they both live!!!! Just have a small water leak from the water intake(its always where you can't reach it) Due to one of my best friends engine expertise(thanks Cliffy!!) put fuel and water to it, and bam- lit off the first turn of the key.:ernaehrung004: It goes to RBI for the rest of the wiring tomorrow, if my luck holds a water test will happen next week.
Thank you everyone for your support and help!!!:evilb:

Westcoast 08-29-2008 09:24 AM

Well....Any updates? Did it float or sink? How about a video of that bad boy!

scottie150 09-16-2008 06:03 PM

Still waiting on the wiring:mad: Was supposed to be done Monday, Monday stretched to Tuesday- had just an hour left on Tuesday so I left it till Friday- Friday I show up at closing and they still have a long way to go- so I grabbed it and at least put the other drive and tie bar on- I will try to post some pics up tonight. I can't complain too much because what they have done so far is looking pretty good:cool:

502ss 09-16-2008 07:25 PM

Boy it looks real good man! I love the clean look at the back. Mine seems cluttered with the external steering rams!

I should have taken a week off from work and flew out there! We could have had that thing wired and in the water by now! :ernaehrung004::D

scarab kv 09-17-2008 12:48 PM

Look'n good Scottie. Been following yours and 502's project threads for awhile. Won't be long now. Post some pics on the Club Scarab thread. Got a couple other left coasters on there also.

Wayne

scottie150 09-18-2008 11:48 PM

Thanks Wayne- but I want to wait till it's worthy enough to post, hopefully in a couple of weeks.:D I like what you guys did with the KV vids- keep up the great work!!!!:ernaehrung004:

Too busy using the boat to post updates?

Did she see water yet?

scottie150 10-03-2008 09:12 PM

Have not seen water yet- still waiting on electrical. Got it back last Saturday but I have been out of town all week. Hopefully if the weather cooperates I will be able to get home tomorrow, I am currently stuck in Battle Mountain, Nevada waiting for the weather to clear:mad:

scottie150 10-11-2008 09:28 PM

I hate to admit it- but I won't see water with the Scarab this year. However- so you guys don't think I have been sitting on my a$$ doing nothing, I shot a video of it running before I fogged and winterized it. My only problem is I think the file is too big to post- anyone have any ideas?:food-smiley-007::food-smiley-007:

At least we'll still have the forums to keep us go'n through the winter!! :evilb:

Scarab slack time

Dont let this guy fool you. He has more time to work on this Scarab than anybody. The trouble is he has more toys than carter has liver pills and they take presidence over working on the boat. I guarranty if there was a large breasted bikini clad babe sitting on the hull Scott would work on it every nite. But instead he chases around his cute wife doing other stuff. Come on Scott, no more excuses. Get this thing done. We have boating to do next summer. :evilb:
