43' Thunder

Big Al is gonna do it!!! let the stagger begin!!!

Rookie 01-25-2013 07:01 PM

Your going to stagger the Thunder? Pics are needed of course. And with 1100's what does she run?

romie 01-25-2013 07:04 PM

If you have spare time I would like mine done also.

yes its the plan... this sub 100mph club SUCKS A$$!! lmao

she will run just about 100 in perfect conditions... whenever I may be lucky enough to see those!!

stagger will yield 110 without too much effort, once of coarse I get the tuneup and prop requirements figured out...
but my reasons are more for servicing than speed, as Jamie so eliquently pointed out!! lmao

the adventure will soon begin!!! stagger stagger, crawl crawl, run a bit, fall down!!! sounds like a great night of drinking... lol

lemme know when you're ready... :angry-smiley-038:

jeff32 02-18-2013 04:42 PM

running rich in third picture !

adk61 02-18-2013 04:57 PM

yep... float sticking... fixed that day

romie 02-18-2013 07:27 PM

No not ready. The guy i got the boat from just put new transom stringers etc in. I wish he had staggered then or removed 1. Is it true with the stock 525s removing one between the weight and not overly powerful engine I would only loose 8mph?

adk61 02-18-2013 07:33 PM

this boat ran in mid 70s with a pair of 700s and #3s... what drives are on yours romie?

romie 02-18-2013 07:50 PM

TRS 26p and 27p on the centre one

jeff32 02-18-2013 07:56 PM

why not all same pitch?

romie 02-19-2013 06:49 PM

Im not sure but I think because center drive gets help from the outter drives.

hullofjustis 02-20-2013 12:36 PM

Center drive is to far in the water the prop airiates extra ptch helps keeping the engine from over revving,

ICDEDPPL 02-21-2013 09:51 AM

Sounds like an easy project, what... maybe a day or two ? pffffffttt!!!

I was told three if we work our ballz off!!! :lolhit:

adk61 02-21-2013 10:26 AM

ok here's the big question of the day... which way would you go with this project assuming you were in my seat/pants lol
I have, at my disposal the option to run either #5's on boxes or wet sump 6's, the power is still same, 1100sc's big torque (14:71 hi helix retrofit case) that should explain to my readers, as to why the blowers sits so far back on the manifolds...

my concerns are not only for speed, I also want some dependability, GK Systems is now making many of the SSM gearsets solving some of the Merc "NLA" situation. That still leaves the case issue to deal with...
All this being said, "WHAT DO I DO?"

romie 02-21-2013 07:19 PM

75 in relatively calm, The guy i bought it from says it does 80. I fig with some nice chop she may get close to that.

romie 02-21-2013 07:22 PM

I thought 6s were always killer looking.

they are that, but very heavy, I can only afford wet sumps and they eat power... so I'm a bit confused as to the true way to go here...

With my IIIA's at 2" below on 35" center I'm cruising at about 85mph @ 4500rpm... haven't opened it up yet, but I'm sure close to or just over 100 is a probability in the right water...

now a staggered setup on 21" centers would yield much greater speeds, I was told by Macnamara at Archer that I should expectat least 110, but likely once I get all sorted out 115mph isn't out of reality... (5's on boxes)
he also said that 6's would produce similar results, but I'm having trouble accepting that logic...

romie 02-21-2013 07:44 PM

How much speed variation is there between drives?

adk61 02-21-2013 07:48 PM

well that's the million $$$ question isn't it?? lol
thats why I wanna do it right the first time...

Perlmudder 02-21-2013 07:49 PM

this is going to be an awesome project!

sr73z 02-21-2013 08:17 PM

sounds like it's gonna be awesome either way! we need pics! I would love to see a 43 scarab staggerd, that's a bad a$$ boat:cool:

use the number VI s much better choice the boat will plane faster with a higher X dimension that cave plate makes a big difference and you will go faster !!!!!!!!!!! That's what its all about !

adk61 03-10-2014 12:58 PM

I know Dan we spoke of this at great length... I have no choice as I have the 5's and can't afford the switch... however as I stated in prior conversations I have the 1" spacer/cav plate to run on the #5...
what my question is now, what prop would I run with 1.68:1 ratio and 1" above bottom with 10" standoff box??? 4 blade, 5 blade?? 6000 rpm is max I want to spin

Team Archer 03-10-2014 02:51 PM

On the 38 Staggered with 1,000 HP Natural with 1.62 wet #VIs We run Mercs 17.5d x 37p 5b to 6000 RPMs . Top speed that we have seen is 114 MPH The bullet is 1.5 inches above bottom and its on a rail you can let go of the wheel at 100 an it go's straight ahead !

Team Archer 03-10-2014 02:52 PM

With your weight and full cabin you will start at about a 17.5 d x 32 p 5 blade that's a nice starting point

that's a far cry from where hering said to go lol they put me at 17.5 x 40 x 18* rake in a 5 blade...

adk61 03-11-2014 08:20 AM

I'm running a 16.5 x 32 4 blade on 3As side by side @ 2" below and 35" apart now... stagger will be @ 21" apart and 1.5" above (no spacer) as suggested by you in earlier conversations...

sonic700 03-11-2014 09:18 AM

Sounds like a really cool project. If you are looking for a place for those VI's the back of my boat would love it. Good luck with the project, keep us updated

hullofjustis 03-11-2014 11:18 AM

my buddy went from 5's to wet sump 6's on his 38 flat deck and it ran 100.9 mph in the ocean with the 5's on it. same year different blower set up and inner cooler setup everything else was the same other than i believe there was much more weight added because of the psi blowers from 14:71's and the huge innercooler that was used. instead of a super chiller after that we could not get it to run over 96mph. i feel the fives are much faster but very difficult to get on plane with 5's because they have no negative trim and the high x dimension.

adk61 03-11-2014 01:38 PM

yes... 38 flat deck is not a Scarab thunder with a modified bottom and not staggered and so on and so on... Dan at Team Archer (Scarab Guru and creator of same) says I should expect 110++ with the configuration discussed in this thread... the boat runs in the 90's now with side by side 3As @ 2" down and a dead gear ratio... (1.33:1) .

one would think that staggering with #5s @ 21" spacing, 1.68:1 gear and 1.5" up on a 10" box should drastically change that number!!! lets hope so at least, so I can go into this project with some hope!! lol
