Any 21' Scarab1 owners here?

I have recently purchased a Scarab1. Its an '86. Does anyone have any specs. on it? The windshield is badly crazed. Are these available anywhere? I'm in the northern Ill. area. Thanks in advance.

Greg Mc 09-30-2002 08:30 AM

Hi Mike, Thanks for the reply. I have a few questions about these boats and was wondering of you could help me out?

Wally 09-30-2002 10:35 AM

Hey Greg, i'm not familiar w/the 21 scarab but if its just a piece or two of Plexyglass you can get some and use your old widshiled to cut a new one your self. :D

If you don't like the way I drive stay outside the orange and white buoys..............
I have an 86. Bought it used, no manual. Don't know much about it other than on Lake Mich. it likes to spend a lot of time in the air, and it's a hoot to drive!
What kind of motor does yours have?
My windsheild is trashed too. If you take it to a plastic shop they can cut out a new one for you, thats what I'm going to do.

Greg Mc 10-02-2002 10:23 AM

Mine has a stock 260hp. in need of a tune up. If you find anyplace to do the windshield could you post it here, I will do the same. I've almost condidered painting it black till I find a replacement. What are you running engine and prop. I think mine is either overproppped or something is out of whack, I can only get 4 grand and it seems to slip alot.

Problems with cracked windshields seem to be very common on this model. I know some owners that have replaced the windshield and it wasn't that expensive. Mine also have cracks and the previous owner painted it all black. I think it looks reasonable good, but would like to have it replaced.

Greg Mc 10-29-2002 07:04 PM

I spoke to a friend of mine in the glass and mirror business. He said that the windshields are nothing more than smoke lexan with a polished edge. The crazing and cracks just comes from exposure to the sun and stress. He said it would be no problem to make a template and buy enough lexan, polish the edge and bend it around ourselves. We are going to do this next spring. I'm thinking it is going to be like screwing a live alligator to the boat. Should be interesting, I'll let you know.

pic of 21 I had a 1991 Scarab Excel. Once owned Tim Robbie. Owners of the Miami Dolphins. When I bought it , it had already been custom painted to match the Dolphin colors as well as a Miami Dolphin under the rear hatch since it was rigged supposedly by him with a 225 Yamaha. The boat was great untill it sunk. Now I have a 26' 1990 CV w/twin 200 Yamaha's.

21' Scarab 1

I have an 87 Scarab 1 with 200 HP Evinrude. Looking at windshield replacement. Anyone want to get one when I do for a discounted rate?

hdtvned 04-29-2007 10:49 AM

I made a windshield for mine. Its not that hard. If anyone wants to see the pics e-mail me at [email protected]

triplethreat 05-06-2007 02:33 AM

hey also have an 86 scarab I. Has 260hp with edelbrock performer rpm intake and holley carb. Currently in the process of converting to a bravo. With a 14 1/2 x 19 3 blade prop i got 59 on gps out of it on lake ontario.

ferraristyle 05-18-2007 03:04 AM

I have a 21 as well. My windshield was broken and I replaced it with Tinted Lexan. Was kind of expensive at $900, but Lexan is really good at standing up to the bumps. 2 years an no problems yet!

CHASIN THE DEAL 05-19-2007 10:04 AM

I have a question regarding the fasteners on the windshield does anyone know if they are through bolted or just screwed in? I guess really just want to know how big of a job is replacement. Thanks

ferraristyle 05-20-2007 10:05 AM

On my boat that fasteners are just like a big bolt type. One side is the screw with the other the bolt but both are flush. Not hard at all to replace however finding the actual fasteners from wellcraft can be challenging. I had one person offer me $100 for 3 of them for his Scarab. I'm sure there is a hardware store solution in there somewhere.

I took my entire windshield off the boat in about 10 minutes.

AcryliCo 05-24-2007 07:53 PM

It appears that the windshield on this one is in an aluminum frame and there doesn't seem to be any radical bends that would require forming. You can easily take them out, make templates & cut new ones. A tip: put the new ones in on the boat (as opposed to doing it on a free standing frame). I'd use acrylic. Lexan (polycarbonate) is more impact resistant but scratches way easier.

gpracer1000 06-07-2007 10:24 PM

Just got an 86 Scarab I from a friend who neglected it over the last 10 years. Today I was cleaning it out and noticed that where the motor mounts bolt to the fiberglass "frame", they have punched through :( .

I am also in need of a windshield. In my case, all the surrounding railing is missing as is the hardware. I borrowed the boat 2 years ago and it had a plexiglass crappy simple windshield on it. Some girl slipped and fell on it and it broke. I took it home and copied it on lexan sheet and painted it black. Unbreakable, but I would love to have the original one to copy. Anyone who takes their old bad one off and trashes it......I would love to have it and copy it. Or even just the dimensions of how tall at certain points around.

Here is my Scarab after I took off the tinted air deflector that wraps around the whole windshield. I took it off hoping too pick up more speed but the difference in speed I picked up wasn't worth the amount of wind and bugs that blew in my face so I've put it back on... LOL

Good looking boat. Contact Donnie (marineclean) about his oxidation remover and polish.

Got one this year- 86 Scarab Excel. Brand new complete 350 MPI w/70 hours. Gelcoat in perfect shape after buffing. All other aspects in great shape.

Got specifications from the Wellcraft website. All boats there, you just have to figure out how to use the site (www.wellcraft.com)

May have to sell this boat if I don't start using it.

ctmarine 06-15-2007 03:53 PM

whoops, profile out of date. Stupid Donzi is long gone.

Also, Scarab is 1989

I just had the front section of my 3 piece windshield made at palco platics in whitman Ma. he could do the mold but cut a flat piece perfect it fit awesome! I told him he should hold on to the pattern... it was 200 for the stock and 80 for the cut. its was on my 87 scarab I and identical to my 1986

Thats what they made mine out of.. I have enough cut off left to do the side winshield pieces on both boats myself.

New Scarab Owner

I bought a 1989 Scarab Excel 21 and am looking for any parts or pieces to restore the boat. Mainly looking for interior pieces such as seats and trim and possibly a windshield. Thanks

hblair 07-15-2021 07:44 AM

You also might try offshore powerboat swap shop on facebook. You might have to buy a whole other parts boat in order to get the parts you want. Then dispose of whats left when you're done.
