Update on our recently acquired 377. Unfortunately we had a mechanical failure in the port side engine. Engine has to come out and cam needs to be replaced. Plan on inspecting everything to make sure theres no damage to bearings etc.. Original builder used the wrong distributor gears. Stbd side engine survived by the grace of the offshore gods. Always something with these damn boats. To be continued!...

Thanks on the boat. It’s been a long time coming. We were going to run it a few hours today and check again for a few pesky steering and oil leaks. Pulling away from the dock, right motor wouldn’t idle, kept dying. It was running crazy rich. Both motors had been very healthy and would fire right off with just a bump of the starter. We screwed around with it for hours, trying to set the float levels, there’s two Nickerson Holley carbs per motor.

We dropped the right front carb float adjustment screw between the exhaust manifold and couldn’t get to it, so I dropped the trailer and ran to the shop to rob a screw off one of my extra carbs lol. We couldn’t get the engine running right and had actually bumped the pier with the bow when the right motor suddenly loaded up and quit. It left a place we’re going to have to repair now lol.

We finally loaded up and got back to the shop, and being the boat idiots we are, we connected the hose and kept screwing with the right front carb, kept overflowing, couldn’t get the float valve turned down.

Shon says “Let’s check it for trash”, and there it was, an aluminum shard about 1/2mm wide and 1/4” long. Keeping the float valve open. It was a thread from when I took the fuel lines loose to pull the blowers off a month or so ago.

I tell this story to let you know I feel your pain brother! These boats will break your heart on the regular. You have to be the kind of guy who doesn’t learn lessons well. 😂

I wonder why the cam did that? Have you looked at the other side?

Original builder used the wrong distributor gear. Should have used a bronze or poly gear. The stbd side survived but was getting ready to do the same thing.

That's what I figured. Maybe luck will be on your side and nothing else got damaged. Are you guys going to try to pull the motor soon?

UPDATE! Engine was pulled out today, hopefully have the full damage report by the end of the week. Expecting the worst but fingers crossed hoping for the best (considering the situation)
