Great job ! Keep the pictures coming. |
Re: ī95 Scarab 22 Re-Rig
Hey Peter, What color interrior are you going with? Is it going to be the grey that your seats have?

A yellow or grey sterring wheel (like the one below) by livorsi would look sweet. Don't forget to cut out the hole for the drivers drink holder. You may want a giant one for those big cans of Fosters.

And by the way, this is an unbelieveable project. I can't believe the resources (time and money) you are puttting toward this project. I cant wait to see the finished product. It's gonna be awesome.
Also, it makes me worry about my boat (98 22' scarab) when you find all of these MAJOR structual and design problems - Roby should we be concerned? |

Iīm back
got some more pics, like from the exhaust by GGB. Very nice, good craftsmanship and very short and compact (compared to others like livorsi or the ones from eddie), only 6" long. Also, we put the graphics on. This isnīt comparable to any kind of custom paint job, which would be hard to get here since we donīt have any shops capable of one, but it is what we intended in the first place and i think it came out pretty good (the front decal is about 1.5m which should be like 5ī in diameter and was pretty tough to get on without glitches). |

Re: ī95 Scarab 22 Re-Rig
Meanwhile, the engine finally arrived after a short quarrel with the local distributor.
I donīt know how many of you have seen or considered buying a Mercury Racing product, but this engine is sweet, with ARP bolts and Crane Gold Roller Rockers for example. It is obvious this isnīt a stocker but custom built. The IMCO extension demands the engine pedestals to be some 2" higher than stock, which got us to fabricate something, but otherwise the installation was pretty much straightforward. in this boat, thereīs plenty of room, especially since the Scorpion is a SB. Also, we obviously didnīt too bad since the hull dindīt make the slightest noise when the weight of the engine was put onto the stringers and the transom, and the additional supports we put on the trailer seem to be just right. But there is a major problem, anyway: our engine is a 2004, and so is the drive (XR Sportmaster). Obviously, Mercury had changed the driveline of their HP drives within the last couple of months. We bought the IMCO parts for this boat earlier this year, in april. Then, there was the older version driveline and so the shaft IMCO supplied with the extension box kit doesnīt fit the new drive AAAARGH! Interestingly, the u-joint on the input shaft on the older drives was larger than the new one, nobody knows why. Conclusion: after a phone call with IMCO (called the california office first, which is wrong, i needed to talk to their nevada people. However, they were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly, and Ron from IMCO nevada even called me back. HE CALLED ME BACK!!! I still cannot believe this, these guys -IMCO- call back. To Austria. Other companies dont give a f$$k about customers from overseas, not to think about calling them back or even considering dealer or distributor inquiries. Small market, ok, but hey...), I will have to send our driveshaft back to them and will get a new one for the new driveline in about...2 weeks. Bad f&&king friday 13th... But the engine ran after a couple of turns and runs very smooth and sounds great. I donīt know about the US noise regulations, and the GGB exhaust surely does a good job and makes it sound much better than the old open exhaust i had with the 350 (extremely loud and sounded somwhat, well, like a broken exhaust.) but it still is quite loud if run on the trailer with water from a hose. Should be better in the water when the exhaust is kinda hidden under the swim platform. Should the question arise: the package with the Scorpion and the Sportmaster Drive had a very interesting price tag, they said something that this combo was kind of a special deal. Maybe because they are dropping the Scorpion and making mods to the their line of drives. But what do I care, even when the Sportmaster drive in this particular boat may be overkill, better if it can take more power and load than needed; and the whipplecharger is already on its way... Pics from the engine install will be posted within the next few days. |
Re: ī95 Scarab 22 Re-Rig
Syclone,
Incredible project! I haven't seen anyone that can do the level of re-rig you are doing. Some of us 22 footers are thinking about trying to get bolsters in our boats. Question, can the floor of the 22 be lowered to accommodate the higher sitting bolsters? I was thinking maybe a 6-8 inch step down arrangement about one foot forward of the rear bench seat. As the resident 22 guru, what are your thoughts? Thanks, Tom |

not a chance. first, there is only about 2" between the floor and the tank. second, the floorboards are resting on the first outermost strake (dont know if the term is correct, but from the description you could know what i mean) at the side walls. even if you make the floor smaller from side to side you wouldnīt gain enough space, you would hit the hull bottom first. peter |
