Just to make it interesting, while many run indirect steering on race boats, I ran direct cable steering... I can't tell you how many people warned me about running the boat with direct steering but it made me a much better driver overall. I don't recommend it to any one. For me though, I really liked the quick response....
Indirect steering would have a pulley at the wing plate and the cable would run back to the boat.
As seen here in this poor image, it stops at the wing plate. The result is: 1 half turn of the steering wheel the engine would be fully turned to the left or right. While running at speed, I wouldn't need to move the wheel more than an inch or 2 to keep it from chine walking....
