Generators generally have a safety shut-off mechanism for overspeed, low oil pressure, hi temp, and some other conditions. If it dies because of loss of spark, this may be your problem. Check to see if any of these are a problem. If not, disconnect the grounded kill wire from the distributor or magneto. You might need to check your wiring diagram for this. If it runs then, it's probably a relay in the shut off circuit.
If it dies from lack of fuel, check filter, pump, carb, etc.

Most of the time,no water. Is water flowing thru the thru hull fitting? If the boat has been on a trailer or in dry storage, it may have lost its prime,an easy fix. Or the impeller may have failed, also an easy fix.

Also check the oil level-will shut off if it's a little low.
