Default Oil Temp Problem

I feel that I am running excessive oil temps. Just cruising around 3K will drive them up to over 270, I then drop back to 2500rpm and they cool back down, but usually stay around 230. It has been speculated that I have the original smaller oil coolers that came the the 454s. Not that I am running 502s they might be too small.

Any thoughts on this??? And if they need replacing where to get some???

Thanks for the help.
John

Did this just start after you changed to 502's. What temps did the original engines run. I have the standard cooler and it peaks at 240 degrees when I spin it above 4,500 RPMs.

try this thread for some good info on the basics. 270* @ 3K seems like way too much.

These motors were in the boat when I bought it, so don't know about before.

Also, I had to freshen one up last year because of a problem and its temp is within a few degrees of the other one with more time on it.

Thanks again.
