Which 496 ECM Diagnostics Manual?
#1
Ehich of the two PCM/ECM-555 diagnostic manauls would be more thorough for diagnosing/troubleshooting fault codes from my Rinda Merc Scantool?
#33 PCM 555 # 90-8637571 (2000)
or
#36 ECM 555 # 90-864573 (2001)
or
Is there a newer/updated version out now?

To clarify, Merc parts.com lists two diferent manuals with #33 being more expensive. Yet other than price, it shows #36 being a year newer? I've seen posts on here reference #33 but it would now be almost 7 years old and there's been a few tweaks to the 496 since it first came out. Now possibly there's been a an updated #33??? I'm only going by the MercParts website manual listing. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/shopManuals.asp

It's always a good thing to have a service manual, but I think you will be disappointed with the amount of information regarding troubleshooting IAC problems. There is next to nothing.
After reading your other thread, I think you have done a pretty good job of nailing it down to the PCM. Like stevesxm, I had my doubts, but I don't know what other conclusion you can draw.

Getting the manuals is probably OBE, but while in the mindset might as well get them. They'll go with the boat or scantool when I sell either.
In the interim, I'm on the hunt for a used ECM to replace it. They're pretty proud of their new ones ($$$).
Anybody know if an ECM a couple of years older will work okay in a later model 496? I have a lead one, but we're not sure if it will work fine outside the programming to reduce the soot thing. Otherwise I don't think there's any changes to the motor ignition-wise (electrically), besides the mechanical stuff like rods, drain valve rust problem, and the lean/rich adjustment is there?
The IAC is working, just reacting slow setting the alarm. As I said, I can feel it work with my thumb, and watch it work on the tool. Is it possible to flash, or reprogram this anomaly out???
If anyone has a late model ECM laying around their garage, shoot me a note.
BTW my ECM is dated 12/2003 pt # 865366T01
