On my 2000 F-350 (and I think on a lot of trucks) there is a valve that you can simply turn where the fuel filter is and drain it into a bucket (or on the ground). Although I have never experienced it, I don't think that water in fuel is a rare happening if they have a valve, warning light, and specific instructions throughout the manual for water in fuel situations.

Might want to start there....

You need to drain the separator. If you don't drain them regularly, it f's up the water sensor in the sep and the light stays on. I don't believe it's available separately- you have to replace the whole unit.

Be careful of the drain plug- I believe it's a 4mm hex key. Some are steel and some are brass. The brass one's strip easily. If yours is brass, and you can get it out, get a steel one.

I would suggest draining both filter areas on the 6.0. One on the top of the engine and the one on the frame. Mine did this a lot about a year ago..but it has been fine since.

I'd change the fuel filter for sure, anytime you get water you will get a bunch of rusty crap with it.

sometimes the sensor on the rail filter gets some junk on it and will cause it to come on no mater how many times you drain it.

I have changed filters way too many times on my truck. Had the dealer reset the light and within 100-200 miles the light is back on. Change filter again same thing. My light just stays on no matter what I do.

It's a 6mm hex. Also, when you change the filter on top you should pull the fuel that is left out of the canister.
