Default Oil pickup

Pulled the oil pan of my engine yesterday, Wow I didn't know the oil pickup was susposed to lay in the bottom of the pan. I guess I'll have to make them a little stronger. Any ideas????????

I am not sure I am following you. Do you mean the pick-up fell off the pump and was lying on the bottom of the pan? If this is the case and you are using the stock style chevy pump and pick-up, try putting a spot weld where the pick-up goes into the pump.

Yes the pick up MUST be tack welded into the oil pump. Your machine shop should be able to do this for you.

The pickup was welded in. It broke about 1/4 inch from the weld.

The pickup broke. The piece that was welded is still in the pump.

Is your engine balanced it sounds like you have some harmonics going on in there. Or someone beat the s%& t out of the pickup putting it in.

I HAD THE SAME THING HAPEN TO ME AT THE END OF LAST SEASON.IF YOU SUSPECT A BROKEN PICKUP (SUDDEN LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE)YOU DON'T HAVE TO ADD MUCH OIL TO GET THE PUMP HOUSING UNDER THE OIL LEVEL TO LIMP HOME IF YOU HAD TO.I MADE A CUSTOM BRACKET SUPPORT THAT IS TIG WELDED TO THE TUBE AND BOLTS TO THE PUMP HOUSING.MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE CLEARANCE TO GET THE GEAR OUT.WELDING THE PICKUP TO THE HOUSING IS THE NORM BUT ANY SPECIALIZED WELDER WILL TELL YOU THAT WELDING STEEL TO IRON IS NOT THE BEST IDEA.

Thanks for the info! I talked to Canton today, They want to see the pickup, They designed a new one with supports they say. I thinking about maybe trying a different make pickup, I just have to measure the depth of my pan. (Canton 9 qts)
