Here we go again. Another high speed night crash. How many times does this have to happen, before people get the idea this is dangerous, and can get you and your passengers killed? Think about it. You are driving blind. No high intensity lighting. No radar. No infrared. Nothing. Fortunately, this guy didn't mow down some innocent people in a boat like what happened a few weeks ago. He hit an island instead.

Photos posted in the above referenced thread show the drives appear to be trimmed way out. This also appears to be a very prominent shoreline profile that would be pretty hard to miss even at night ...

Lots of vegetation and established plants. This is not something that appeared out of nowhere recently.

sad, but the drives probably hit the rocks and were forced up.

There was NO moon out last night, and it was REALLY dark. We were out around 10:30PM at around the same latitude in VA.

Prayers to everyone involved. It appears as though the thread linked above is gone.

It is very sad indeed. I understand they are from here on the dock but I haven't met them. Just remember folks life is too short as it is so be careful and use your head.

Most likely scenario, running by GPS thinking he was just going to cut the edge of the island. GPS shows the water line at the typical high water mark, and the lake is being held extra low for dam repair, so it's 45 feet lower than where the shoreline shows on the GPS. I'm not familiar with that exact spot, but there are plenty of places where you can put it on land right now with your GPS telling you that you are 200 yards from shore.




I was out on cumberland till a little past dark last night, and it was as dark as I've ever been out there. Some lingering cloud cover just to make sure there was no light at all.

There were multiple threads started on LC.com about it, the one linked above was merged in with the rest, so that's why it's dead.

Is it me or has been a very bad year for night crashes? Seems like every weekend.

Very sad, very Bad

Early Sunday morning, just after midnight, a "fast boat" ran aground on Cemetery Island on the west end of the main lake. According to an official, the 36-foot Baja boat hit the island and overturned, ejecting a female rider onto the rocky shoreline and pinning the male driver under the boat with fatal injuries. The surviving female suffered broken bones and was hospitalized.

Sgt. Wayne Glover if the Ky. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife Resources told WJRS radio that the victim was 44-year-old William Todd Jackson, of Lexington, Ky., who died at the scene. Jennifer Haag, 42, also of Lexington, was transported first to Russell County Hospital and later transfered to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

According to Glover, who says alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident, the pair were traveling northeast near the mouth of Beaver Creek, when their boat crashed onto Cemetery Island. According to a report on WKYT-TV (Lexington), the coroner says Jackson did not see the island until moments before he reached it. Jackson apparently tried to swerve out of the way, but the boat hit the island, flipped, and then landed on top of him. The TV report also says Haag suffered a broken arm.

It took the remainder of the night to free the body from under the wreckage. A signficant quantity of fuel spilled into the surrounding water. A team from Marine Assist spent much of the day recovering the vessel.
