Default thermostat housing

My buddy has a four winns vista with a 5.8 ford/volvo engine in it,we went to winterize it today and he pulled the t stat housing off before i got there because he wanted to run it without a stat to get the antifreeze through the engine faster but he could not thr thermostat out and it looked like it was one piece with the cast housing?anyone seen this,i think an oring holds it in there but not sure.

There may be a plastic insert with an aligning groove that will need to come out.
