I looked at a couple of used X's on a lot Thursday, and both had rusted undercarrages when looked at from behind, and at the frame near the rear lisence plate braket. On one even the shocks were rusted, and on the other it had been painted to look better. Both were 2000 models.

Question: Has anyone else noticed this?

As these were the only two I've looked at, and on the same lot, it may have been caused by where they were used before coming to the dealer (especially since the shocks were rusted too) Any insight on this would be helpful. -- Thanx.

This looked worse than normal road salt, at least from here in the mid-west. Looking past the license plate at the truck frame, it looked like rust was "delaminating" the steel. (If you have even seen plywood absorb water and swell, you know what I'm trying to discribe. The only options I could think of were: Ford did a poor job of rust protecting the undercarage, or, these were used to launch boats on shallow ramps in salt water. That is not something we see ofter here in God's Country Any additional insight?

My '95 Ram doesn't look too bad, maybe you're looking at the wrong brand.

If only Dodge would make a heavy duty SUV with a Cummins engine, I would seriously consider it. But until they do, and until the Duramax is proven, that leaves Ford/PSD

I own a 1999 Ford Expedition that has severe rust on the undercarriage. I spent 2 years in Cleveland and washed the truck every 3 or 4 weeks. Upon return home to virginia beach I noticed the rust. I even had extra undercoating when I bought the truck. I attempted to contact the original dealer and they just ignored me. I went to the local ford dealer and they had the regional warranty manager look at it. They told to me to go to the arbitration board. The board claimed that surface rust is not covered in the warranty....Only through rust...that will probably happen when I reach the end of my warranty.
I will never buy a ford truck again....I'm sure ford knows full well that they have a rust problem...that they refuse to acknowledge.

I had a 97 Expedition that I sold with 85,000 miles on it. Don't remember a rust problem on it. That is, in part, why I was shocked to see the rust under the 2000 Excursions.

The Expedition was a nice truck to drive in the city. And I found its level of finish to be better than the Suburban's. But the Suburban is a better towing truck.
