Default 2011 Dodge 1500

Claim 10,450 tow rating so was curious if anyone here has any experience towing with one. I can't imagine a half ton towing 10k safely but then again I have only towed with my dually or F 250.

If they can tow 9k with no issues I might have to look into picking one up, I know they are great trucks but the tow capability is gonna be the deal maker.

I wouldn't do it. Dodge 2500 Cummins is what I run and you'll get better mpg, have more torque, and better stoping ability.

You'll get crap fuel mileage towing with that Hemi. I towed 5000lbs with a 2003 3500srw Cummins truck and rarely got below 17mpg.

You will love the tow-haul pkg on the diesel too. If you go Hemi make sure the tow pkg is on it but I would get the diesel. The 6.7s don't get the mileage the 5.9s do but you can remove some things and increase it quite a bit.

I have an 06 2500 HEMI, 4:10 rear. 33 Powerplay I/0 (not sure of weight but I do know the trailer is #2550 empty) usually have 100+ gal in boat and a ton of chit packed in boat. I average 10.3 towing. Used to have an 06 1500 HEMI, 3:73. Got a lil better mpg. Both rode nice and didn't squat in the rear. They also both stopped fine with or without the brakes on trailer working. When I picked up this 2500 a few months ago the dealer was trying to get me into the '11 1500. If it was my everyday driver I would've just for the cushier ride. I really thought hard about the diesels but didn't want the maintenance or cost associated with them. I am perfectly happy but now I want a bigger boat so I guess I'm fuct either way LOL. If the weight is legal and your not crossing the country every weekend the 1500 will be fine. Hope this helps a lil.

1. Maintenance costs on diesel engines are much lower than gas engines.

2. Yes diesel trucks cost more but longevity will make the diesel the better deal.

3. The cost-analysis fails when diesel is $1/gal more than premium unleaded gasoline.

Sorry bud but oil change is 3x the price and where I'm from so is any maintenance. Also it will require injectors around 100-120k @ 2500 for the cheap ones (not including labor) plus you might want the trans done around the same mileage. For that loot I can run 150k+ miles and if need be drop a new engine in and go another 150k+ miles...

Oil change is higher with dino oil but Amsoil will take you above 15k and some have gone over 50k with it. As to injectors I've been on Cummins forums over five years and I don't remember anyone recommending that. Yes the pre-2010 autos were the weak link but a torque converter replacement will be pretty much all you need.

A boat that weighs close to ten I would never tow with a 1500 unless launch was close. I have a F250 diesel and it tows great but let me tell you a couple of more years or even sooner I might dump it for something more fuel efficient. The 12-13mpg all the time sucks, 100 buck oil changes also suck and not mention the twice a year 60 buck fuel change and the 4.25 a gallon for diesel when regular unleaded is 50 cent cheaper almost. I love the diesel and it has its uses and some people need it but frankly I think its outlived its usefulness for me. For the average boater who maybe goes out 2-3 times a month and only goes an hour or so, a big disel doesnt make sense for most applications.

i'm not at the level you guys are but i just bought an 11' 1500 w/ the 3.92 rear and love it, this is my 3rd ram and by far my favorite, just came back from a trip with some friends and he was towing a 19ft tahoe w/ 2500 diesel and he was amazed with how my 1500 towed our nordic, we kept right with him up and down the hills no prob, granite my rage weighs in around 5k, but on the highway at 70 we don't even feel the boat behind us
