Default Help !!!!avoid water ingestion Wellcraft Nova 26 ST with exhaust under swim platform

the exhaust on this boat is very close to the waterline and my mechanic urged me that he will not be responsible if the engines take some water and get ruined , please help !!!
would an exhaust diverter (silent choice) help ? or internal flappers? or longer risers? anybody had this problem?

Those Wellcraft models sit very low in the back. Would recommend rubber flappers at the least.

Also, don't pick up a bunch of fat chicks at the bar and let them ride on the back hatch in seas.

LaughingCat,

i do have the external flappers , do they go bad ? a couple of them don't close all the way , should I replace them all so they are tight?

my fountain sits low too. Flappers is about all you can do. I had corsa on a boat once and they had metal welded plates just inside the exhaust for this reason as well.

But in reality if water comes up through the exhaust would it really hurt as water is already coming out of the exhaust and I think the water would just cycle threw the system. Now I guess maybe if the pressure was to high you could get leaks into the bilge or blow a head gasket or something I dont know. But if your worried just by new flappers look below. My flapper dont fit tight dont know if they really should.

the problem is not when the engine is running, you should have at least 12" above the waterline to the point inside the exhaust that water would have to get over to make its way into the motor. you have to plan for being out in the ocean and you lose power for some reason then the waves can get water into the exhaust if it doesn't have enough rise, doesn't matter where the tips are just how high up water has to get.

You could also buy tips with internal butterfly flappers and still have the external flappers you are currently using. This would give the water 2 obstacles to get past.

You can make the flappers stay closed putting a small nut and bolt on each side of the flap at the top to keep the faces together. Visualize putting a clothespin on each side from the top.

I've had engine guys talk about that on our Sunseeker. As you can see from one pic, the exhaust is just above the water line (bottom paint ends at the water line). We used to have Silent Choice too.....doesn't really help the problem. Not sure what engine you have, but from what we've found, the Mercury exhaust stuff is bad to start with. We have 502MAG's and the point where water mixes with the exhaust is so close that during idle and the intake stroke on the engine, it is possible to pull a little water back into the engine. Ridiculous. We killed two birds with one stone. We removed the silent choice (nice, but just something else to maintain) and added Gibson bullet mufflers. We had IMCO custom fabricate new water jacketed risers that went up and back down about 12 or 14 inches so the point where water mixed with exhaust was right before it went through the transom. These will pay for themselves over time for sure. As I remember, the IMCO custom risers were about $1750 a pair? Not sure......

You have a different boat for sure.....similar problem. Just adding an exhaust spacer between the manifold and the exhaust elbow didn't do much for us (or the boat). I really like to fix things once.
