I think it would depend on who did the rebuild for sure. Yes. it would make me want to talk to the person who did the rebuild and do a thorough sea trial with compression and leakdown tests.
It could end up being a great thing for you if the rebuild was done right.

Agreed. It all depends on who did the rebuild. As long as it's someone reputable, they should be fine and should offer a warranty. We give warranties on everything we build. If it doesn't have any time at all, then there should be no issue with giving a warranty. Find out who did the rebuild and speak with them.

Yes I always cringe when I see "300 hours on port side motor and zero hours on starboard ". Makes me think why not freshen both when your already going threw all the work of pulling one motor. I feel it's kind of an insite into how the rest of the boat was maintained.

But then again I bought a boat exactly like that and went through both a year later.

Snowmobiles/dirtbikes are even worse, I see used ones for sale that say zero hours on new motor and you can just about guarantee someone blew it up then fixed the top end without EVER finding true root cause and 90% chance it will blow up on the first weekend of riding. I would be pretty untrusting IF a boat was for sale with a "new" motor also as so many people spec out the cheapest garbage or even worse, the shop doing it throws JUNK in it but charges for good stuff, you hear about this time and time again. There used to be a engine shop in my area that was notorious for selling guys Big block chevys with steel cranks, 4 bolt mains, forged pistons, 7/16 rods and it was ALWAYS cast crank/3/8 rods 2 bolt mains when torn down later,. I heard he even went as far as to steal the stuff the customer brought in (internal parts) and substitute junk. I think this guy showed every customer the same new parts he kept around and then put junk in, he is long out of business now, Hmmm, Smitty

I heard one horror story about Jasper, a local machine shop was fixing a sb chevy that had problems, when he tore it down it had 3 different style valves in the heads, the heads were clearly welded where there was a crack and then ground (and were of course cracked next to the repair) and crank was ground .040 under, looked like a 14 year old was in charge, Smitty
