Default SBC cylinder head opinions..

Well time has come to start thinking of what to do to my 383 next.. in a month or two it comes out.. because of my income I have to start buying parts or i'll be broke by spring. What i am thinking is trying to get 475-500hp outta this motor. The short block is built to take it and high RPM too. I don't want to spin it any faster then 5500 because of the alpha ( yes it is still alive and kickin) right now I am at 5300 rpm. i think the major player for HP is gonna be cylinder heads. I have vortec ones right now with 170 cc intake ports, 222/230 dur. .543/.563 lift on a 112 LSA roller cam.. 9.9:1 comp ratio Which cylinder head is gonna be my best bet for making this kind of hp? DART, EDELBROCK, CANFIELD, ect..

How much intake CC's can a 383 support without being to much for the motor?

Thanks. i'll be back in the morning to see what you guys came up with because i have to use my moms puter at work cause mine blew up..

Depends; if your going to stick with that cam porting your stock heads would be the best bang for the buck. After market heads
dont have as much port velosity at low lift due to there larger port volume.

Dart Iron Eagle with 200 cc intake runnners work really well on a 383 / 5000 RPM stroker motor. Go with iron heads if you cool with raw water, especially salt water.

You may make more horsepower with different heads but low rpm performance may start to take a big hit. I really think that in the RPM range you're turning it, increases in port size may not do much to help increase power.

Leave the heads alone and put a blower on it instead. You won't need to spin it faster (maybe a couple hundred RPM due to the increased air movement of the blower) and it should make a LOT of horsepower with minimal boost. You could pick up the blower kit from Summit for under $2400 I believe.

If you want to be able to take advantage of a better cylinder head, I'd suggest going up in displacement in order to provide good torque down deep in the RPM range (Car Craft or Hot Rod is working on a 454 small block... but that would be big money).

A blower and porting stock heads would be the way to go would give you more power at less boost keep the cam on the mild side lots of good reliable power at low RPM.
