Default Removing Silent Choice Exhaust ???

I would like to remove the Silent Choice from the rear two engines on my 47 Fountain (the center engine does not have it). My question is can I just remove the upper pipes that contain the diverters and cap the cast pipes coming from the drive or do I need to remove the entire assembly and cap them off down below, I'm assuming the latter requires the engine to be pulled. See pics of my setup...

I've capped the cast Y pipes with no issues. Preferred method would be removal though.

I've seen in pictures, not in person, expandable pipe plugs. They sell them at hardware stores.

May I ask why would you want to do that? Besides the noise- there is somewhat of performance benefit -- it lets the engine breath a little better? I know that I get just about 3 mph opening the exhaust up.

This is how my boat came to me. I have too much cam to run them, and have heard of a few OEM motors sucking in water when a flapper fails, but I'm no expert on the subject.

I've seen guys use ripper pipe plugs. I used fiberglass molds that were the same oblong shape as the Y pipe. I bought them from Envision boats years ago.

I believe you can buy y pipe cap off plugs from Keith Eickert performance. I was looking into doing that when I was having issues getting my silent choice to work with my headers.

yup, you can

I have some evidence of reversion on the back two motors. The tails are very short and the 525 cam is pretty aggressive. I am going to be modifying the tails to have the water exit at the tip outside the boat. I never use the Silent Choice anyway and there are some (including Merc) that suggest that the Silent Choice can contribute to reversion on the 525. Just trying to do whatever I can to minimize those possibilities.

HyFive 578

Thanks for the insight - my engine 7.4mpi is all stock and I've never had a problem with reversion in any way. Take care and good luck
