Hi guys,
I just picked up my first boat last week and it’s a 22ft PowerPlay (Powerquest) with what I was told is a “5.0 Mercruiser making 355hp” lol.
Now I know enough to know the hp number is Bs but now it’s got me wondering what exactly do I have for an engine as I know the carb’d 5.0s came in a few different hp rating.
What really got me started on this is the boat seems to be having an issue, it’s topping out at 36mph at 2500 rpms with a 15x17p prop. With that prop I’m pretty sure it should be able to reach a better rpm which then leads me to believe the engine needs some work. Problem is, I don’t know which engine I have in order to start ordering parts.
Heres the video showing the engine running:
Thanks guys,
RMH

To be honest, I'm surprised the boat even gets on the plane if it's only pulling 2500 rpm. Something is definitely amiss.
Gonna need an engine number first then do some searching, there's a few websites that can help you trace you're engine. Here's one that's worth a try.

Engine number is stamped on the block but I think even POPYACHTS would have the engine number on paperwork somewhere.

that 5.0 is nor never will make 355 hp period. They got rid of the thunderbolt ignition set up and thru in HEI 1992 chevy truck distributor / ignition set up.
5.0 carb Merc OEM stock made 205 hp and 220 hp.
Would like to meet the person whom thinks he has a 355 hp 5.0 L Merc. .

Locating MerCruiser Serial Number Tags

- Engine Serial Number: The serial number tag is located near the starter, by the flywheel housing; or, on the rocker arm or flame arrestor cover.
- Transom Plates: The serial number tag is located on the inner transon plate inside the boat; or, on the upper swivel pin.
- Sterndrive Serial Number (separate from engine): The serial number tag is located on the upper drive shaft housing (starboard side or on the back of the housing

do you have their number - I want to sign up for that fast ride.
chit they could not even tell me where the spark plugs are on a 5.0 Merc. Amazing the huge listings of boats this company has and even sells.

Once upon a time I launched with a completely new re-power that was a total unknown in terms of what to expect speed wise . On the way to pick up the mechanic I was really impressed with the performance numbers I was getting.
The mechanic got on board and after eyeballing everything took the helm and got it up on plane . A minute later he slows back down and pulls out a small screwdriver and fiddles with the rear of the tach .
My perception of great performance numbers went completely out the window . The damn tach was set for the wrong engine !
