In 15 years of having a performance boat with a bravo drive, I have never heard of such lunacy!

It really doesn’t have anything to do with the gears, they just thread on to them
Mercury doesn’t even sell them separately, but others do

Their primary function is to hammer ( by the cam action of the rotating ring)the shift fork and cone out of the driven gear, when shifting out of gear, they do to a lesser extent, help it shift into gear, there’s also a more robust shift link set up used with the high bumps due to the heavier load they experience
