2007 Mercruiser 496 Magnum MPI performance upgardes

I have a 2007 Caravelle 232 Interceptor with a Mercruiser 496 Magnum MPI and a Bravo 1 drive. I’d like to add some horsepower and top speed to the boat. I am considering Raylar’s stage one heads, cam and intake package or something similar. Had anybody on here done a similar build? Or anybody built the 496 at all? Is tuning available for the 2007 Mercruiser MPI system? Thanks for any information and for your time.

I've built a few 496s. I went Whipple on them with forged internals. Basically you have to start from the ground up if you want a significant HP gain and be reliable.
The Raylar 525 kit is about as far as you can go on the stock bottom end. The heads are very nice and flow exceptionally well.

I've built a few 496s. I went Whipple on them with forged internals. Basically you have to start from the ground up if you want a significant HP gain and be reliable.
The Raylar 525 kit is about as far as you can go on the stock bottom end. The heads are very nice and flow exceptionally well.

I had Whipple do the tune on my builds. It is good to have an AFR gauge so you can give them the needed info so they can dial it in.
The factory 496 has some weak points when it's built up for more HP. The weakest link are the hyperuetectic pistons. The first ring groove is very close to the top on the piston so it's a weak point, and they can snap off the top ring land area. The second weak link are the rods, they just aren't up for high HP. The cranks are strong, even the cast cranks can handle 750hp.
The stock heads have very weak valve springs, like 90lbs of seat pressure, so a spring and hardware upgrade are needed if you go larger camshafts.
You can certainly build up a 496 and they run great, but you should beef up the rotating assembly if you really want longevity. Personally the most I would do with a stock bottom end is the Raylar 525hp kit. This would address the weak valve springs issue.
