I'm hoping to find a nice looking billet flame arrestor and was wondering if anyone knew of any used or good deals on new? I really like the Vortech style as I think they look very trick. I'm looking for one that will fit my 502mag. Anyone have ideas other than new from Vortech or Eddie Marine? I have some aftermarket parts on my motor already...has anyone noticed anything at all from adding one of these other than maybe cleaning up the soot from the transom?

I got a Arizona Speed set-up w/ K&N filter for my 454mag. Basically a filter with adapter, nothing fancy but cheaper than the EM or Vortech. If I remember, around $150 total. Looks good on the intake. Much better than the stock "black box".

CP Performance also has a Hardin Marine piece that seems to be fairly popular. I have the Vortech myself on my 454 Mag MPI. Arizona and Teague also sell the Vortech, but with their own name on the flame arrestor. The pieces from Vortech, Hardin and Eddie theoretically work better than the K&N piece because they are larger, whereas the K&N model requires an adapter that creates a bottleneck in the airflow. The truth is, it is highly unlikely that you will notice any performance difference with any flame arrestor.

I disagree with you Rick. I put a Vortech on my 502mag mpi and noticed a definite improvement in low end acceleration and a slight improvement in top speed.....maybe 1/2 mph or so.

All the FA's mentioned use an adapter. The adapter design actually helps direct and channel the airfow into the intake vs. the stock part or with no FA. A bigger element will flow more air (depending on the restriction of the element media used) but the difference between the different types is probably imperceptible., IMHO.
