Default OT: Car starter issue

1997 Toyota 4Runner w/ 70000mi. When I turn the key, it (the engine/starter) often does nothing. There is no sound no turning, nothing. On the second turn it usually fires. Lately, it has taken three to four key turns to get the starter to turn at all. Is this a problem with the starter, battery, or something else? Any input is appreciated.

This should be simple enough to diagnose. You have to ground the clip of a test light, then put the probe on the small wire on the starter motor. This must be done when the starter wont turn over. If the test light illuminates and the starter doesn't turn, the starter is bad. If the light doesn't illuminate, then there is a wiring problem. If you give me more specifics, like engine size, I can e-mail you or post a copy of the wiring diagram for your truck.

If the test light does not indicate power getting to the starter then it is probably the ignition switch. They do wear out sometimes and need to be replaced.

I tried to post the diagram for you. But, I can't figure out how to get the picture resized to fit. PM me your e-mail address and I will send it directly to you.
