Default Great South Bay

I'll be heading though Great South Bay this weekend. Coming in Fire Island Inlet I need to run the channel along the shore. When I get to Ocean Bay Park there is a channel that heads out to the middle of the bay. If I take this channel can I just run the middle of the bay with no problems or is there a channel out there? We'll probably stop at Watch Hill Marina for a while.

Thanks

I would advise you to look at Maptech and get some paper charts of the area. I am a SeaTow member for a reason: I boat on Great South Bay, where land is water and water is land!

Intersecting channels can make buoys confusing and several "humps" are not marked at all.

Have the charts and the GPS is programmed and ready to go. I'm just worried about "things that shift". Most of the bay beyond Ocean Bay Park looks pretty open. Just want to be sure.

middle of the Bay is ok DO NOT GO OUTSIDE THE WATCH HILL CHANNEL OR CUT ANY OF THE MARKERS SHORT. It won't be fun if you do.

I have been running the area for years... do not forget to also watch your tides. The area is a blast but a low tide even the marked channels could lead to a problem. Plan on mid - high tides and you will love it.

Hey Mr Velocity,Thats my back yard!!! Those guys are tellin the truth, the middle of the bay is fine. When you come in FI inlet stay to the south side and you will be fine. After you go under the bridge, about 2 miles in,you will pick up the bouys. Just to the right is Kismet, which is the place to go for food and drink,50$ to park, but it comes off your tab! next place east is flynn's,which is good also, but they hit you up for parking. If you] go north in the ferry boat channel, just by kismet, after about a mile ,you can go east and the water is fine.Post your fax # and i'll fax you a pic of the chart with those sites marked.Ill be out there myself with my 30 VELOCITY. Where are you comin from and what kinda boat u got? Tripps Email [email protected]
