More power without going inside? Whats power? 15 hp = 1 mph. I think everybody needs at least 75 horse more, if not 150 hp.2-3 mph usually cant be felt. Speed cost money son!!! Raylar today so far. Greg

The old 454 and 502 Mag Mpi's have several upgrade kits mainly consisting of ecm re-programming, adjustable fuel press regulators, high flow arrestor, thermostat and hotter ignition, claiming 40 to 50 hp increases. I remember an old article in Hot Boat by Jim Wilkes where he tested one of these kits on a 502 with very good results 5-6 mph gain!
Where's something like this for the 496???
The 496 has been on the scene now for 5+ years, you would think somebody would have figured out an affordable upgrade solution by now...
Raylar's kit looks promising, but there's a lot involved and it's pricey...

The head design of the 496 will win out over the 502/454 "old" style heads eventually. THe heads have equal port volume that leads to equality between cyllinders as far a mixture goes. I think that part of the problem is that GM is putting cast cranksin the motors now. For best reliability forged components are best. So I think that not as many people are putting the money forward in developing the motor if the base isnt tough enough to stand the extra power. G

Our BCK103 kit is very affordable for a 100+HP add on. A 100HP addtion 425HP to 525HP and the 496 MAG goes from 375HP to 525HP that 150 HP more which should translate to about 15 Miles per hour more with the right prop. As for going inside, our kits go on quite easy. I don't know of any outside parts that will add 100 hp to a 496 except a blower and if you don't change the pistons, you will be going back "inside" sooner than you think! If anyone here thinks they are going to add 100HP cheaper than our kit, they don't know much about marine engines. Price a HP525 motor and you will see what 100HP more than a stock 496HO will cost.
