new to me 308
...some were asking details so instead of cluttering up the other thread I started this one...anyone else with a 308 please feel free to post and share info!!!
just picked it up after the first of the year 308 with 300xs's. its all white it did have a wrap already but I/we (wife) wanted to add a little more color so I'm putting a new but similar wrap...doing a little repair/upgrade to stereo and touching up the gel-coat in just a very few spots and looking into different props (any suggestions???) some build pictures of it are here http://www.bullockmarine.com/boat_li...308/index.html |

Looks great. Prop wise I think most have had the best luck with 4 blade cleaver dewalt props. I see it has Mike Nass cowlings, do the motors have DBR level 1 kits? If not that would be a great upgrade.
|
Does it have lower unit vent kits and double seals?
|
Looks nice. Is that the one that was at Ryan's shop recently for sale? Curious to see how you get it to run. I am sure the Dewald's would work great for top speed but I have had some results for rough water with 4 blade Herrings thru-hub round ear props also. I know Gary is running 6 blade herrings on that 32' he just got done. Heard it has touched 110mph. I do not think a stock 30' Skater will come close to those numbers though stock. I have a buddy in NC with one that has 300x's on it. He has run 112mph light on a good day. I would think it will be around 100-105 depending on whether you get the DBR mod or not.
|
Congrats! I almost bought that baby in 08-09. Nice rig. Are you doing Tickfaw with it? I'm still working out plans to possibly come down just depends on Will and the boss!
|
Congrats on the 308 LA. Very nice. Those 30's have some incredible lines. Good job on the graphics too. Looks great!
|
Great job on the 308!
I'd call Dave at Dewald props, he's great to work with, and knows what he's doing. 610-926-2964 |
thanks guys..... . I have had it out only once before I took it to the stereo guy, ran it up into the high 80's, maybe touched low 90's, was not watching closely, never pushed it to WOT... the gps does still have 102mph so that's what it ran at some point... maybe on the trailer tho LOL .... it is a different feel than the 28 that's for sure! very little hop. its soooo much bigger than the 28, just didn't realize how much till I picked it up.
lake...engines are stock. I do have plans to get the DBR upgrades, assume that the nass cowls will work with their top upgrade seeing as they solve the water ingestion issues of the stock cowls diamond...owner wasn't sure if his son installed seal kits but thought it was done...can I tell by looking???.... I will do it if not... any suggestions? yep double, this was the one at ryans shop...my son and I met ryan and pete (photographer) when we picked it up, both real nice guys. ryan was trying to get me to race it at Smoking The Sound in Biloxi this year LOL. wife just rolled her eyes when I told her that. owner did tell me about the 32 owner running 110 with 6 blade herrings that was the 32 race canopy flat deck right?... I don't think I want to even know what a set of those will run me LOL... are 4 blades easier on the lowers? still working on the graphics...the deck graphics is still not even close to something we like yet...may end up changing it all lol who knows. sam I will run the skater one day and my sunsation the other at the Tickfaw 200. look forward to meeting you and seeing that bad azz 338 if you get to make it down here. Its a kick in the azz time, the rest of you guys should try and make this run, it's nothing like any of the other runs... REALLY...very laid back and no need to hustle from one stop to the next, you can enjoy the stops and the people...on your own time and your own schedule for two days. Sam asked me for a map, I'm gonna try and see if I can get one...I'll see if I can get caseyh post one up in the poker run section. |
Herrings are expensive. They are nice but for the money Dewalds are hard to beat. My boat runs best with them. Regarding the lowers drop the gear case. To see if you have the Wayne taylor shaft seal you will have to remove the water pump housing. It is billet aluminum. If you have the stock seal it will be plastic. The shift seal will have a fitting on the front to an expansion tank up in power head. These upgrades are well worth it. I can send you the info to buy them if you want. You will spend about $ 400.00 per motor.
If you need a gps I have a Garmin 5208 I can sell you. Has the skater logo when you power it up. Looking forward to the finished wrap. |
.
Congrats on the new boat. Looks huge for a 30! Double-R, please send me the info to buy the shaft seals. What happens if you don't have the special shaft seals? Does water intrusion occur in the lowers? |
Hay congrats on the boat you will love it 4blade is definetly easer on the lowers which is the weak link on those motors good luck with it
|
I do need a gps. Size will be an issue I'm limited on space where I want to mount it
I'll pull lowers ASAP to see what I have. |
I had issues with water intrusion on mine before the mods. The gear case on a cat especially the optis get hot when running hard for extended time. The case builds pressure thus the catch tank on the shift shaft. Works just like the ones on stern drives. Keeps from pushing seals out. Once that happens when it cools it sucks in water. The wayne Taylor shaft seals have 4 seals to the one seal that is stock. I also had TNT here in s fl add a 3rd prop shaft seal. I change gear case oil about every 20 hours. No water issues. However I did snap a drive shaft on my L/H one.
I will ge Noli I will get info tomorrow and post it. |
.
Thanks Double-R That makes sense, water intrusion occurring during the cooling down. |
looking for some bow pics (looking down) to get some ideas for the wrap. I looked through just about all the skater pic thread but only found a few. any help would be much appreciated.

Also call me tomorrow. I have a break at 1 CST |
Double Rigged, How did you get the "Skater" logo on the Garmin/ I have a Garmin GPSMAP 720. Is it possible it make that model display the logo?
|
stereo and LED lighting should be done today...off to get a few chips in gel touched up, buff out...then new wrap.
|
Own an electronics company and we are a Garmin Dealer. It was a favor from one of the engineers. I do not think that it will work as the software was for the 5000 series units. I will however check just in case.
Sorry |

old wrap off, gel-coat touch ups getting done today...always run into delays with this stuff huh, glad I started when I did. might be done by summer LOL. still have to figure out the gps mounting. any ideas out there???? Nick at Island Audio is working on an idea he has for it. Guy does great work if any of you locals need custom stereo, led lighting etc...he does cars and bike as well!

I would move the stereo head unit and put the GPS on the starboard dash. the head unit is smaller and I would think it would be easier to find a spot for that someplace else. possibly put the head unit on the backside of the center console facing the aft seats and have a small remote for it on the dash somewhere.
|
Send me a pic of the dash. I would be happy to spend your money with some ideas!!!!! LOL
|
I did think of moving the stereo but if I put the GPS on that side I wont be able to self navigate very well. may end up like that if I can't get it where we are talking about mounting it.
double I think I'm just about tapped out LOL but thanks for the offer LOL |
Put the GPS on a slight angle and you will be able to see no problem.

On my 308 I am installing a JBL 3" round gauge style head unit in the console facing rear. Then JL Audio Amp and JL m770 speakers. The JBL head unit connects via Bluetooth to your phone and has wireless hand held or steering wheel mounted remotes. Anyway that will clear up your dash for the GPS. This is my set up for my GPS on the 308 You keep monkeying around and you have to borrow mine for Tickfaw! |

might work at an angle, but when I wear my sunglasses it really takes away the ability to see those kinds of screen displays, at least it does in the sunsation and that gps is right in front of me. was thinking that if we mount it just to the lower left (will make a small dash drop) maybe as long as my long azz legs don't hit it LOL this is a pic of my dash when it was new at skater...still same lay out but the stereo is in the middle of the passenger side.
skate, I may take you up on that even if mine is done LOL |
damn you skate...:angry-smiley-038:...went and looked at that round JBL unit, pretty cool!!!!...now I may have to change up my dash
|
Beautiful New Boat! Love the Grafics!! Any bites on your Sunsation?
|
one nibble...wife may cry if it sells anyway, she loves the V hull ride. I should be pushing to sell the 28. Two skaters with only 2' of difference doesn't make a lot sense. LOL...now if I could trade both the sunsation and the 28 for a bigger V we'd both be happy:evilb:
I still have those labbed props for the sensation too. |

Looking good!

Boat looks nice! Looking forward to hear how it runs?
|
wish I could tell you how it runs now LOL. maybe this weekend, but lots of work around the house plus it's our first wedding anniversary on sunday so i will be busy I would imagine lol.
wife got those pics when I was backing in...I did some work on the dash and the stereo (skate, I installed the JBL bluetooth round head unit you told me about...it's sweet!!!,) and a raymarine touch screen...should have taken you up on yours double but I already had mine before I went with the round unit and could have fit what you had... will take some better pics this week. Also added a cool LED lighting system you control with a smart phone ap. |
What model Raymarine? I installed the Raymarine GS95 Touch Unit. I like it a lot. Thinking of upgrading intercom system as well.
|
Very nice LA!
|
put in an A75 touch screen. I have not played around with it yet. could have went with a bigger unit after I moved the stereo but oh well LOL.
thanks for the compliments guys Nick is working on gunnel light idea he has...when they are done I'll get some video of em. hoping to put in some transom lights and I assume they can be added to the interior system to change colors etc too. |
