hell of a job. thanks for posting

315duramax 05-01-2020 08:59 AM

Not too many pics to share. Got the initial inner sponson laid up. 3 layers of 1700 with 3 layers of 9oz S- glass to balance the resin ratio out. Laid it up all the back to the bulk head, between the stringers. Post baked the resin and letting it gas out. This weekend going to prep the glass and get it ready for 2 more layers of 9oz s-glass for a little wet bed, and 2 layers of Carbon for some added stiffness. Outside tabs are going on little at a time As it is spring rush and have a parking lot full of projects. Paint by may is getting a little pushed back due to the spring rush being crazy this year. Lets say paint by june :)

ill post a pic of the layup in a bit once i get a chance.

speicher lane 05-01-2020 10:18 AM

How does your layup differ (if at all) from the original from Skater?

We did multiple burn tests to determine layup schedule. We got very close to mimicking the orig layup

315duramax 05-06-2020 10:07 PM

I also see the imported Labatt product

unfortunately that is my job. As much as i love my guys , I think that’s my job. Lol. Lead by example !

315duramax 05-14-2020 09:05 PM

Carbon is on and post baked ! Time to wrap this up and get the deck on.

total this whole section was 2 layers of carbon all one unit. To spread load. Wasn’t pieced together. It just looks like sections due to the peel ply pieces in the layup. All one. All wet!

Looking good! I had a hell of a time to cut the sponson joint up in front of my chriscat, thinking of the day i had to go back in this tight spot to fiberglass back hull and deck together!
thought about using brush and roller taped on a stick or something like that will see when i get there or use your experience when i read how you did yours!:)

315duramax 08-02-2020 10:57 PM

Finally making some more headway on the project. After a week or two of walking by it between other actual paying projects , we have a new game plan. Should have the deck on this week. (I know, I’ve said that for a month) we locked the deck back down (it popped the tab) on the bulkhead. Trimmed and cleaned up the bulkhead before locking it back down. Fixed a few small fractures in the Kevlar on the bulkhead. Staggered the core back 4” to overlap it and brace the seam on the bulkhead. Couple pics. Not much to look at. But we’re making progress !

Well the boat wasn’t done for shootout like we hoped. Or even close. Hard to find time on it with such a busy shop this year. Can’t complain. We got the deck fully on. Full Kevlar internal tabbing as factory. Need to tab the outside and get it into bodywork. Me a while we are going to be moving down the rear of the boat and getting that easy stuff taken care of.

Bow is in primer. Shot it about a week and a half ago. Forgot to update thread. Primer has shrunk. Going to block out the bow and continue moving on the the stern. New bulkhead from skater came in for our firewall on the port side. Going to be getting on that project this upcoming week! Had to wrap up some paint repair this last week so no progress on the skater. She’s coming along.

nope not really ! The bow , yes, we overlapped a foot to 6 feet into original material to gap the seams. In a major stress area like that. These deck areas don’t need that. 3” clean scarf with consecutive fabric overlap is all you need. Stacking the layers and cutting the layers proper so you don’t have a huge hump to grind down thus weaking the joint if doing so. The bulkhead was only minor fractured. And the deck was just minor cracking where from the weather the core was compromised. Now, the next round of pics will be a bit more interesting rebuilding the deck above the bulkhead. Just trying to wrap up some work this week to be able to tackle that project.

man I hate personal projects.

315duramax 12-12-2020 08:50 AM

Bulkhead body worked. Bulkhead deck in. Core replaced near fuel fills. That part of the deck was all jacked up. Found a part of rotten core on a crack on hullside. Cut that out. Bagged new core in. Kevlar and s glass layup and vacuum bagged down. Transom next then bustle last.

Transom is in. Epoxy curing under increased heat over holidays and Stringer uprights going In. Waiting on new order of epoxy to bag up the last panel needed for bustle. Transom was built with mixture of glass , kevlar , and carbon. With glass and carbon tabbing. We are getting VERY CLOSE to being done.

Wow , sorry , it’s been a while since I updated. Transom done , just have to finish some minor body. Hatch got fitted. And working on finishing bustle this week. Ended up selling my sterling motors and picked up some basically brand new 1350/1550 Teague power plants. This is the last piece to the puzzle. For what it’s worth, I’m getting tired of this project 🤣 but I will see it through ! We’re so close to paint. I know it doesn’t look like it , but we are. Cheers !
