" In The Clear" 40SS Rebuild
This site is pretty dead these days, but i figured i would post my rebuild of the former UB Violated on here for those who would be interested in the project. Boat sustained damage from a wreck in 2013. I purchased the boat from Jeffs son this summer and finally got it inside to get working on it. With approval from, just about all, of the individuals of the families, along with Peter at skater we will be rebuilding the boat. Our goal is to showcase everything we at Upstate Powerboat are capable of, coupled to honor the guys who were lost in the boat years ago. Along with to show the incredible build quality of what skater builds. If you do not support the project, i would respectfully ask you to keep it to yourself.
The boat will be named "In The Clear" and hopefully will be ready to unveil for 1000 islands poker run this upcoming summer as long as we can get the time between customers boats to get it going. Deconstruction has already started. So with that, we are starting the build thread! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...955dc2b83b.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...906603b271.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1976dbc6bf.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dfc823a579.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...57dd24cc21.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...565d6c3532.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b4efc65899.jpg |
Current rendering ive come up with. Working to add a little more color. Thoughts?

I like the rendering.
|
I like it and look forward to the build
|
Looks like another heck of a project! As far as thoughts for paint, you’re probably trying to keep the original colors, but I think replacing the green with blue would be hot.
|
You know....when I first saw Jeff's boat in person I was like "who would paint their boat with those colors...but after seeing it more and more (and meeting Jeff), it grew on me and my thinking turned to "man, those colors are bad azz!!"
Looking forward to the thread!! |
I always liked the original paint but your rendering looks even better. I was at that poker run when the accident happened. We were in the slow group and drove up on the boat, it was a sickening feeling knowing something really bad happened. RIP to those men.
Good luck with your project and hopefully you can bring her back to new |
Following.
Bittersweet seeing the boat again. RIP Jeff and Brad. I like where you are headed with the graphics/colors. Nice tribute to without looking too much like the original. |
.
will be following...awesome thread! . |
I like the colors, what program do you use for the rendering?

I will be following as I do you on IG already. Best of luck with it.

Yes, please post details here for us that do not use facebook. Good luck, looks like a lot of structural work (imagine the force that caused that). Very interested to see the details / progress.

Deconstruction has started ! Figured the front is going to take us the longest so might as well start there. Chased a little bit of wet core but cut it all out so time to layup some panels and get to work

Wow! Can't wait to see how this project goes.

Fantastic rebuild!

First of 6 vacuum bagged Bal-tek panels being cut and mocked. This panel is the only true “straight flat” panel on the boat so we are using this panel to start to work out dimensions off of. The 2” core running surface is next. Will probably lay that up Monday.
all of the panels are half laminated. 3 layer 1700 epoxy bagged layup. Exposed core on inside. Going to tab together everything externally. Then do a large layup on the inside of the sponson. Going to run carbon and Kevlar strips between the stringers all the way to the bulkhead. Doing this will bridge the gap and distribute load rather than just having a short seam. Incase we stuff a wave at speed or something. going to start coming together fast. (I hope) 🤣 https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...79f77eb35.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e0b0b4437.jpeg |
First panel bonded on. Got the lip also bonded on as well. We popped the lip off the table when the resin was still green and pre bent it in place to let it full cure in it’s needed shape.
last night we bagged up a 2” core for the running surface and plan to pop that off the table tonight and get it pre bent to post cure in its also full bent shape. after we get the running surface on, it’s pretty smooth sailing https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...85758582b.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d9e267fcf.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b343a0388.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6faf0bb5f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8be8310bb.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3541f8cd6.jpeg |
Looking good!
|
Got the main running surface bonded in and bent today. Letting it cure over the weekend before ill release it. Let the epoxy full cure In the full shape.
tabbed in the point so it’ll hold it together. surprisingly bend incredibly easy for 5 layers of 1700 and triple stacked 2” core. hull sides up next. Getting as much done before the honey moon next week so I can let it cure up while im gone 😁 https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...93b539622.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a75f20974.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c0f0d9e67.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bcea67a2f.jpeg |
Impressive thanks for sharing!

Stupid question, I’ve never done much in the way of fiberglass repair, it’s an art for sure.
Would it have been possible to have skater use their mold for that part of the sponson and then just attach that? It could be something that would throw them off for a month or however long and wouldn’t be worth it. I have no idea just curious. |

It could be something that would throw them off for a month or however long and wouldn’t be worth it. I have no idea just curious. not a stupid question at all. my plan was to use a customers 40SS to pull a mold off. which , would have been the easiest. stagger the joint and Core. though, timing by the time I got the 46 out, with other projects lined up, having that 40 in the shop in the winter or even.a couple weeks with NY weather wasn't really an option. Second plan was to re shape and pull a tool off my own boat. build a part, graft it on. That, also was going to take too long. 3rd option was to have skater build me a sponson like you say and I would just graft it on. they are way too busy and weren't really interested in it. though, in a hour long phone call with Peter, he explained the panel build process and explained how it was so much easier, less time consuming, and actually stronger splitting the joints across multiple areas. So thats the option I took. route #4 LOL |

Panel #4 bagged down. This one is 4 layers 1700 with some light cloth ontop for print through matching. This will be the inner tunnel panel. Should be bonded on tomorrow or Thursday

Nice. whats next to the skater?
|
|
Made a deal on some serious whipple motors. Will post pics once they are in the truck and headed home 👍🏻
|
Starting to take shape. All the critical panels are locked in and full cured. Waiting on more core for the Hullsides. Getting there ! Should be done with the sponson by end of next week

Small update as were waiting on core to get delivered for the Hullsides panels.
45* angle on tunnel prepped out ready for panel. Bagged a couple seams on the main tunnel panel panel. Locked the pain tunnel panel to the lift strake and running surface. Cleaning up some seams and getting them locked into place. can see in the last photo , how when you bend green resin, and let it full cure, bent , it will hold the shape. we are going to individually tab each seams on the inside. Then do a full carbon / Kevlar layup on the inside running all the way to the bulkhead dispersing the load. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...928a75893.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1ef8b81ed.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...013128f05.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...26a591ae3.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...95755354d.jpeg |
Very interesting to learn and see this. Thank you for sharing. With all of the boats you work on what are your thoughts of skater build quality and layup?

the way these boats are built, is damn near an engineering marvel. Anyone who knows me knows I’m not brand loyal what so ever. Trucks. Snowmobiles boats etc. I’ve been in quite a few boats over the years. If I own a cat, I will only ever own a skater. After seeing their build quality , how they build and balance... its incredible |
Very extensive work! Great progress! Subscribed !
|
Incredible to see the re-manufacturing of the damage. The process is very interesting to watch progress
Thank you |
Well I locked in a pair of motors. Should do the trick to push this ride as fast as I need it!
more pics will be coming in the next few days. This whole shut down has my delay of resin taking a hit. Let’s hope it gets here soon. In the meantime , cranking on customers projects https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2210853044.png https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3431df8b75.png |

Hull panel 1 finally on. Been exhausting trying to get material in these days but we got everything we need so it’s off the races now.
