Default Newbie Needs a little help finding info (oddball sonic models???)

Hello All. This will be my first boat, however I've been around boating my whole life and I have alot of time captaining. The majority of my boating will be on the Salton Sea in California.

I'm considering a few boats and am trying to learn as much as I can at the moment about the particular one's I'm interested in so as to start narrowing the list. I am having problems finding info on the two sonics I like and was wondering if someone could guide me to a good research source or a place to find these, what appear to be hard to find boats.

I would like to learn more about the sonic 220 and a 20ft sonic model, not sure of the years made, in the late 80's early 90's, that has outboards. Any help or guidance to info would be great, i have found next to nothing, but think they are nice looking boats and a good comparison to the others I'm interested in....

BTW, the other two boats I'm looking at are the scarab 22 and mid to late 80's 25-28 checkmate's with outboards. My criteria is fun, reliable, and priced under 20k, preferably under 15k....(i do love the look and sound of outboards)

The Sonic 220 was not overly popular. They dropped it from the line-up when Richard Hewitt bought out Jay Ross several years ago. They sold a few, but I could not give you any type of numbers. I can't recall the the 20 ft. or the 220 ever really being discussed here on OSO. I don't think you would have a problem with one, but you might be the only guy you know with one. If you can find one that is a steal, go for it. The Sonic is a very well known boat manufacturer, and has a great heritage. Jay Ross would have been at the helm of Sonic during the build of any of the years you mention, and he built Sonics VERY well.

None of the boats you are talking about buying are going to be worth a crap in anything over 2ft. of chop. If you would like to be a little more mainstream, and probably have some help accordingly come resale time, you will probably want to go with a Scarab or a Donzi 20-22 footer. Those boats are a little more mainstream in popularity, and both are available with outboards. You will probably find a few more listed for sale, which come resale time for you, will also be the case.

Give it a little time too, not everyone checks this section of the forum everyday. It make take a week for everyone to cycle through.

Sonic made a 24ft with outboards as one of their first boats. They also made a 30ft. I have seen a few listed on ebay, boattrader online, and one listed with an independent dealer.

Sydwayz is right about the 220. Don't recommend that boat but that is just a opinion.

I've seen the 24 with outboards and I think it's a nice looking boat. It is one of the one's I'm researching as well. In case you guys haven't seen one here's the sonic 21 outboard from 1990 I like. No motors but factory rigged for 2 outboards?!?!! I think this could make for a quick little boat. I've been looking and looking though and still can't really find a darn thing about this boat. (the boat will rarely if ever see any chop)

That thing looks kick ass. I'd buy it for a fun boat in a heartbeat. How much is the asking price????

Actually, the 220 w/ sterndrive was made right up until the end of the Hewitt era...we sold a hand-full of them with 350 Mag/MPI's. Great little lake boat...crazy acceleration from 40 to 60, topping out around 70 on a perfect day. Nice deep cockpit and the same amount of dead-rise as the small Scarabs(18/22). Cool throttle setup in the center like a race cat. You could probably find one '00-'02 in the $20's. They didn't make very many of the OB versions at all.
