Hey Sonic 28,
How's it going?? Why look at a 31 when the cabin in the 358 is so much nicer.

trust me after owning a 28 sonic then riding in a 31- 35 -38 sonic you get twice the ride.yes if you want speed and no cabin go for the fountain.the sonic is unique and i consider it custom verses production.i am going to step on my own foot for saying that.thou my fountain is like new.

My 42 Beaker has a nice cabin and vacuflush too. My buddy down here trailered his 45 tripleSS to FL this summer, came down on a wave and it broke. Not completely but enough to get an insurance total. He went back with an Outerlimits.

not all boats are perfect and that shouldn't reflect on the entire brand......but if you want to share stories.......................

My buddies 29 beaker cracked in half. from rub rail down to the V and back to the other rub rail....right under where the V-berth is. He was looking in a storage comp under the V-berth and could see daylight out of the crack when it was on the trailer. He didn't even know when it happened. I guess the rubrail was holding the whole boat together  Totaled to say the least.

Oh and this happened on a river where the largest wave is a 3 footer from the 40 aft cabin that you followed out of the marina.

Hi Paul,

I am enjoying my new 31ss. Yesterday I ran it
from Melbourne Beach to Ft Lauderdale. It runs
like a dream!.

You are right about the room and ride of the Sonics.
I know because I spent two years on my search to replace my 28ss.

Good luck on your search,,

Warren

Maybe we should all go back to Baja... :evilb:

Hi Paul,
Things are good. Our Sonic is great now that I got rid of the Max Machine Worx's drives. Mindi Doller and her crew worked wonders with our boat. I'll keep an eye out for a 31 for you. Hope you and Lisa are doing well. Keep in touch.

Not that I want to stir things up. BUT back in 1989 I ran into Reggie at the New York boat show. When I asked to take a look at the 10 meter that they had at the show, Reggie asked are you buying today? I said no but in the future I will be in the market. I told him I had a Scarab Panther at the time. He said no I can't look if I'm not buying today. Since then Reggie can pound SALT. We bought a 2001 Sonic 358 because we liked the cabin and ride-We couldn't swing the exrta money for an Outerlimits at the time. His boats may be faster but I'll save my money and buy and Outerlimits before a Fountain if I want a faster boat. At least when I spoke to Mike and Paul Fiore in 2003 about a 37 they welcomed me with open arms and to this day they still do. I bumped into Paul Fiore at the Ft Lauderdale show in 2004 where Sonic used our 2005 386sts at the show and Paul said he had seen our boat and understood why we went the route we did and said good luck with the new boat. I don't think Reggie would be that cordial.

Actually, I bought my Fountain after several long and short rides this spring and summer(as a Baja owner) in the Galveston Bay area in a 2004 42 Lightning owned by a guy who is an aerospace engineer at NASA. He is a former racer of Fountains and Scarabs and has 575SC's in his. That boat in his hands handles like a dream and has the finest ride I've ever experienced. He is a most pleasant dude with a smile on his face and never has a harsh landing or a close call. We were in moderate chop and I was chattin' with the women in the back seat when he said,"hey, come look here" and the Tattle Tale read 86 and I could swear we were doing no more than 60.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

first hings first THANK YOU Warren andTom.like i said if you want speed no cabin and a nice ride go with fountain.if you want a little slower but a lot more room and amenities go for the sonic we all don't need speed but i need a boat that looks sharp and is comfortable if someone wants to get out of the sun or just relax the sonic says it all.i am sure that most people , at least myself don't run the boat full speed all weekend and i like to go out for nice ride and raft up to others.Don't get me wrong if someone pulls up to me i want to blow right by them.but in today's market all performance boats that i know run 70-100 so they are paying big bucks for 10mph more.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

I really doubt that Reggie would say anything like that. I know Reggie and he is about the most accomodating person in the world, especially at boat shows. I have seen him go completley out of his way to talk to people and to show them anything they want. Buying a boat or not. Are you willing to go on Maury and take a lie detector test.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

Any, I repeat, any boat will crack when landed or driven badly; wether by accident or driver error. A Fountain 35 is a great running hull; otherwise they wouldn't have been making a version of it since the 80's. The 31 Sonic is one of the most stiff, easy to drive hulls of it's size range, with a great history of reliability. There's nothing else in that size with the same cabin room/usable layout. Oh yeah, I have a tough time believing that RF would ever say anything like that to a potential customer...on the contrary, I'd be more inclined to believe you couldn't stop him from selling you his product.

runafever 12-07-2006 05:03 PM

Re: selling fountain for sonic

I agree. Reggie promotes his product well. Probably wouldn't have a sonic over a Fountain but we have a house on the lake so space in a v bottom is not that important to us for overnighting. However the cabin space in a sonic is very overwhelming I even thin the 26 prowler they make has a standup head. My Fountain has a kneel down head.lol. The 31 sonic is a great boat with 500efis. Nice lines too!

I't was my personal experience and if Reggie was having a bad day then so be it. I was in my early 20's at the time and may be he thought I could't afford the boat.

Probably because its a fountain, and he wants a REAL offshore boat, not a pretty poser.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

Since when did racing become an accurate representation of real world boating? I've been on a lot of poker runs, and when the water gets rough you always see the fountains slow down.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

I've been on both boats and the 31 Sonic seems like the same size boat as the 35 Fountain. The shorter Fountains are very small for their size.

Believe what you want, I have a 42 Sonic, My brother in law has a 42 Fountain. When the going get rough I know what boat I want to be on. Not saying they are bad boats, just saing in the real world environment the Sonic is the better value.

1200 boats for sale in the classifieds right now, 200 of them are fountains. In order for resale value to be a factor you neeed to actualy sell your boat first. When you have actualy expirenced both boats I'll consider your opinion valid.

The Fountain is faster but no way will it have a smoother ride than a conventional 25 degree bottom as the 42 Sonic does, and plus they are built like tanks.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

can you please compare weight then get back to me...kthanks....also the step is there to create an air cushin between the water and the hull...go to google.com look up as much tech info as you can, then when you feel you can talk educated, get back to me.

38 Fountain 8900 dry
38 Sonic 9000 dry
also..you guys were saying Fountain 38 is really like a 35....well now you all look real stupid!!!1 once again education!!!!! not what looks pretty in pictures but facts. you on board with that

I would sure hope they would since its on a freaking river. Fountains are fast theres no doubt about it. The 42 Fnt is one of the best riding boats I've been on. Its just not possible that it can ride as smooth or as dry as a sonic.

Re: selling fountain for sonic

Do you really think steps pack a cusion of air??? It's not a cat. Sonics are heavier than fountains. Did your step comment come from Reggie him self.??? You can fit a 38 Fnt inside of a 38 Sonic.

OL40SVX 12-13-2006 06:39 PM

Re: selling fountain for sonic

Why dont you go to your Fountain A** kissing fantasy land and play with you cat killer Fountains on lakes and rivers. Only the newer vacume baged sonics (fx) weigh that much, which I have a hard time believing. Yes the Sonics are slower and are a much bigger boat, whch why I called them a tank, also for build quality. In a Fountain you can run hard in big water but get the snot pounded out of you and your boat and get soaked at the same time. I have plenty of experience in a 42 and a 40. The Sonic will offer a smoother and dryer ride. Steps were not out on boats to form a cusion of air. It's to lessen the wetted surface of the boat to make it go faster. Steps dont act like a tunnel of a cat. What boat are you running currently??? We are running a 38 Hustler and a 36 Cigarette Gladiator, both run 90+ mph. We also dont boat on an inland lake buddy boy, and by the way I AM The KID!!! Case Closed!!! Now lets get this thread back on topic and help Sonic28 sell his Fountain and get into a 31 Sonic.

kthanks
bye now

I went to Sonics site too and was surprised at the number, which is why I stated it was only on the newer ones. The boat is not riding on air or packing air like a cat does. If you trim a non step boat out then is it riding on air too??? The steps are there to lessen the friction between the boat and the water. The boat is not riding on air since other parts of it are still in the water. The air is forcing the water away from the boat to lessen the wetted surface. That doesnt mean it's riding on it. Thus throwing your point about steps out the window. What am I making up??? None since its all based on experience. You go say a step boat rides better to the Cigarette and Apache guys and see what they say. It's basic Hydrodynamics.
