Thinking of 31 Sonic
I am thinking of purchasing a brand new 31 sonic... Was wondering if anyone could give any feed back on their experiences with Sonic. Also what seems to run best engine options, etc. any info would be appreciated.
that's a no brainer !!! you'll never look back !! had a 26 sonic and loved it, have had a 31 sonic for 4yrs it's incredable!! handles like a rocket ship on rails. loves rough water and slices tru it like a much bigger boat if you can afford it and want to go fast get the new 502's i have the 496 ho's and it does around 75mph gps if that's ok for you.
What you doin with the nana??
I had one with 500 HP's. It does handle rough water great. The cabins are very accomodating.

I have my Banana for sale... at 46... listed in the classified section here.. I do love the sonic for the room..full head for the family... and it will run well... I am trying to sell the Banana: Airtime you saw it in Fairhaven.. it is very nice... I am asking 46 or 39 w/o the motor..... custom trailer... if any of you guys know someone that might be interested.. let me know... I have also told Charlie McCarthy that I am looking at the sonic.. he can tell you how nice this Banana is... please help.. I have a deposit on it for the next 19 days... I do not want to loose it... as for engines.. 8.2 may be an option. but the 377 may be more realistic for my situation. thanks for the help I do appreciate you guys filling me in.

congrats steve it sounds like a awesome boat and red and black my favorite colors. in a few years you could always add small blowers to get 500hp or do a some changes with cam efi and get 425 to 450hp we will have together next year with knot right me and the sutphen boys and do plymouths browns bank for cheap trips its a mile out of the outerharbor haha. and then theres the cape ,newport, blockisland, someones got to jump on the banana with all that custom work on it good luck art

You will love the 31 Sonic! I think it’s the best all around in that size range. If not, I wouldn’t be on my second one!:)

I was going with the 377's for reliability and cost, Tony inidcatd he could upgrade me to the 8.2 motors... wondering what you folks thought.
502's all the way. Probably would run in the upper 70's....doubt you would be happy with the 377's. Just my opinion. why dont you order 525's, then we can trade for my 496's. :) LOL
sonic
It probably is worth it in the long run.
IMHO it would have no resale with the 377's and you wouldnt be happy at all.
definitely get the big motors :)
No replacement for displacement.
Posting Pics for SP123.......nice ride!!!
and definatly the 502's or even better the 525's......
I would go with the big blocks. On boats there is
no substitute for cubic inches. You will get a little more range with the small blocks, but where you are from the 200 mile range of the big blocks should be sufficient. Congrats on your choice! |
steve you should make the conn river run sunday with all the boys. maybe someone will see your boat thats moving up from one of the smaller river boats the 18foot to 22 foot boats. you could have fun and sell it:coolcowboy:. about the motors man if you could swing the 502s go for it. running 80 plus is the balls once in a while. 70 to 75 gets old fast Iwas upgrading my old boat until I hit mid 80s and loved it now I hope to break a 100 with the new boat:evilb:. for wear and tear the 377s would be working more to push the boat into the 70s or cruising at 60. the 502s or 525s would running with less strain. if it was me I would go with the 502s and in 3 years if I love the boat I would up grade to blowers for 700 hp to 750hp and it would be cheaper than a set of 525s. for drives get the bravo x or xr don't get the stock bravo1. the bravo x has a tower in it like the xr but, the gears in the xr are straight cut stronger but wear out earlier than x gears I was told by Pete I think it was. xr is stronger though. I think ernie/mike/dan/pete are all going tomorrow down to old saybrook and drop in under rt 95. look in the northeast section. congrats I am taking out my motor today so we can put the thinner gas tank in so the blower pulleys will fit. Gerry and I talked about bringing the turbine skater to the river but by water it would be 2grand in fuel and we would need wide load permit plus can not drive on the road after 12 on sundays:eek:. see yah ART
You should at least make sure the boat is built with hydraulic steering. It would be a nightmare to go back and try to plumb that into the boat after it's built. If the boat is ever going to run over 70 MPH you are going to NEED IT. I had a 2003 31 built for me with 500EFI'S it's a beautifully balanced boat. I you can find the funds to up grade the power, you will be much happier in the long run.
Definitely go with the 502's at minimum, I've got them in my AT and I wouldn't want any "less" power! Steve

We estimate somewhere around the 725hp zone per motor.... |
Please post pics of the build! Not too many new boat builds in the moderate sizes going on, congrats!:drink:
Any other options you're going with you want to share? Any thought to going with custom motors? Not sure on prices exactly, but would think it wouldn't be hugely more expensive to get over 500 hp a side from a reputable custom builder than the Merc 8.2's? |

I know this is not an apples for apples comparison but with twin 575sci's, on our best day... 94.3mph is what we hit. I have the mills out right now in and currently being refreshed. Just installed the new roller cams and junked the flat tappets, sending the ecm's out for reflash this week. Had a hand full of other changes but should be seeing the triple digit mark no problem....
