They are plates that Mercury put in the 496's exhaust between the manifold & riser elbow to prevent condesation from possibly getting to the valves after shutdown. Drawback is that they reduce the size of the opening. Try a search on "Turbolators" in this forum, lots of reading.

No, Arch hasnt been removed...I uploaded the wrong picture, I was playing around in paint to see what it would like without the arch...But I like the arch...gives it that sonic look.
