Freeport to Port O'Connor toy run

Anyone doing the toy run on Dec 3? I'm planning on going and maybe a couple of my buddies might bring there boats, looks like a good time for a good cause. I will try post the flyer if I can do it from my phone. If not the info is on 2coolfishing.com under the bluewater section.

I'm hoping for brisk! Last year it was in the 60's at that time so i'm rooting for that!

This is a run I'd love to do, I've eyeballed this flyer several times recently.
I actually just purchased fresh water intercoolers and was thinking that if I can get them in the boat soon it just might be possible if I can drum up time to solicit locally for toys for the kids.
Do any of you members know of a good marina for the night with power in Pt. O'Conner.

See ya,
Kelly

T-RAV 10-13-2011 02:44 AM

So far the only marina I have found is St. Christopher's there number is 361-983-2017. They might be able to point you in the right direction. We haven't completely ironed out our plan yet but its looking like the condo we are going to rent will have extra slips, if we go that route your more than welcome to rent one there and plug into our condo.

Busta 10-14-2011 03:37 PM

I've done this run 3 times and it's a lot of fun. Mostly fishing boats, but great people and for a good cause. Most people stay at Clarks Inn which has free slips with your room or there are several rental condos on the water that also have slips that are within walking distance to Clarks. I've gone when it was shorts and t-shirt weather and I've gone when it was freakin cold! It seems like it's always nice on Saturday on the way there and cold on Sunday when you have to come home. They had a great fireworks show last year as part of the boat parade. The town (Port O Connor) really caters to this event. You'll be amazed to see the boat loads (literally) of toys that some of these center consoles bring in.

Are you doing it this year? Its a group of 8 of us, my boat and my friends fishing boat. We are thinking about staying at pirates cove condos? How are the ramps in Freeport Sat morning?

As of now, we are planning to go and possibly with another 3 go fasts. We stayed at Pirates Cove Condos last year and that's where I would plan to stay this year. I just need to start coordinating with some folks. We've never had much luck at the Bridegbait Marina ramp. The tide is usually out which makes it shallow and the ramp isn't great for really long trailers. Last year we got my buddy's trailer for his 40' stuck on the ramp and had to get two trucks and a strap to snatch him out. If you have longer trailers, I would suggest putting in at the park on the San Bernard river and take the river down to the intercoastal. I would however drive your truck and trailer back around to Bridgebait to park it there Saturday night. The folks that put on this event hire security to watch the parking lot that night.

Sweet glad to hear there will be some other go fast out there. We are planning on staying at pirates cove as of now, so I'm glad to know it is a decent place. Do you think my 25ol would have any trouble launching at bridgebait? What time is a good time to be down there to launch with all the traffic? Do y'all try to run with the pack or do you tend to be out front? If y'all did put in at the San b would you run back to Freeport or just take off from there? Sorry for all the questions, first time,I'm sure I will have more questions as it gets closer. Thanks

Travis

Signed up and booked my condo toady!! Hey busta is that one of your crew that is looking for 93?

Baja Barbie 11-03-2011 08:28 AM

As Busta said, we're going this year. I am working on the logistics for departure a time with Jerry and a few other things for go fasts. I'll also be sending an email out to all Lake Conroe Powerboat Club members, posting the information on our Facebook page, and updating this post as well. This is a great event for a great cause and should be done at least once in a lifetime!!

Hey Travis,
No problem on the questions. As for launching your 25 at Bridgebait, you'll probably be okay. It really just depends on the tide. I launched my old 252 there before and just had to trim way up. If we put in on the San Bernard, we will go back around to Bridgebait by boat to pick up whoever drives the trucks and trailers back over. I'll be driving the boat back over to pick up Cari (Baja Barbie). Otherwise she might get mad if I left her at the ramp, LOL!

As for timing, well I think we've always been late. I don't think we've ever really gotten out of there before 10:00. I've run with the front of the pack until we get to Matargorda Bay and then we usually haul from there. There's a few big fishing boats that will run too. This year, I think we're going to try to coordinate something where maybe the go fasts leave a little later so we're not passing people left and right (the ICW isn't that wide) or struggling to stay on plane.

@ busts thanks for the information, up to 30 boats, that's a lot of toys! If anyone needs 93 the only place I have found it at is the fishing center in POC, 361-983-4440. Keep me posted if there is going to be a later start time for the go fast, I'm not much of a mornIng person. Lol.

rgrgoog 11-04-2011 05:29 PM

Baja Barbie just posted on our webpage (Lake Conroe Powerboat Club) that the fast boats would start at 1100. At least that is when we are starting. The stop in Matagorda does not have 93? I need 93 but can run on 89 (emergencies only usually). Guess I will fill up in POC and bring lots of Octane booster.

I checked with russels bait camp and all they had was 87, I found another one in matagorda but I think it might be the same place, one of the pictures look similar, Rawlings bait 979-863-7669. What's the range of your boat? 11 sounds good to me if y'all don't mind me tagging along with ya.

rgrgoog 11-04-2011 08:20 PM

I have a 155 gal tank so it really depends on how fast we go and if I get into the boost any as to my range. I can make it down on a tank easily and probably only burn half a tank. I noticed that the Fishing Center is right near Pirates Cove condos so that will work perfect for me.
You should tag along with us, we have a great group. It looks like we have 5 boats coming so far.
Not sure as to where we will launch yet. I know it wil be high tide at 1053 on the 3rd so that should help us out.

Yeah sounds great. I am in condo #12 at Pirates cove. I can't wait. Have not had the boat in the water since the end of Aug. This should be a great time. I am hoping for good weather as well.
Just let me know where you guys are going to splash your boats at. I can meet you in Conroe the night before and follow you down the next morning or meet you at the launch on Saturday.

We got #15! I hope the weather turns out great, the women deiced they were going to drive so it sure would be nice to rub it in their face!:lolhit:
As far as the toys, do you carry the toys you donate or do they divide them up to everyone?

I think we're in #21 but can't remember for sure.

Well at least you'll have a vehicle to shuttle us all back and forth between the condos and Clarks Inn. :lolhit:

Everyone usually carries their own toys and then they off load them at Clark's Inn into some enclosed trailers. We broke down about 1/4 of the way there last year and had to off load our toys on to one of the center consoles. Pretty much however you can get them there really doesn't matter as long as they get there.

Are they Santa masks or some scary Halloween masks?
I have my Harley riding gear I am going to bring if it is cold (Facemasks, gloves). I also have some full face helmets but wearing them although warm is no fun. I am hoping for the high 70s low 80s to stick around.

I think the bigger boats are planning on putting in on the San Bernard then running back and parking trucks at bridge bait. I will be putting in at bridge bait. It's up to 31 boats last I saw on 2cool.

We plan to be there! We will be riding with Boatman. Looking forward to it!

Just out of curiosity, has anyone checked with Surfside marina to see if they would lift the big boats into the water?

I talked to the folks at Surfside marine (right across from Bridge bait) and they would use a forklift to put the boats in and pull them out for $75.00. They usually charge the 75 to put in and then another to pull out for a total of 150 but She would cut us a deal and do both for 75. She said it is
a rather lengthy and complicated process doing it on the trailer. I have watched it before and it makes me slightly nervous. Probably not an option I will pursue.

I have a big correction to make. I had my rivers confused. The ramp is actually on the Brazos River and it's the Freeport House Municipal Boat Ramp. Jim provided me the GPS coordinates where you can paste them in to google maps to see just where the ramp is: 28.956004,-95.361917

You know where to find me if its a liquid kind of day/night. Papa's Beach by day, Big Berthas by night. Still trying to make the run work as the job on that Saturday is a big roadblock. If all works out, won't have to worry about weekend work after June! :party-smiley-048:
