That way under normal load and summer weather conditions I am right at the upper recommended RPM limit for the motor. Take a 496 MAG for instance. Rev limiter is at 4950. Merc lists the RPM limit at 4800. These motors have been dyno'd by numerous shops and make their peak HP at about 4.700 RPM. So, you can spin the motor to 4,950 but you are falling off the peak HP once you spin past 4,700. The motor just runs out of camshaft. More RPM should always equate to more speed but at a certain point if the HP starts to significantly drop off at that higher RPM you may not see any additional speed.

That is the proper way to test a boat. I was told this right from Mercury Racing.
