Aside from "ease of docking" it seems like there is no point to put twin diesels into a boat under 35 feet or so, unless you already have twin applications to start with.

How about one of these?

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/na/e...ve/d6-350_dpr/

Volvo Penta states that this system is designed for over 45 knots to 60+knots...

Cool Re: Diesel Application in a 30' Superboat

That would push a 30 or 34 pretty good. Think about how it must LEAP on plane.

Very nice for reliability and longevity but 45-60 knots your not going to be flying. Pat how much $$$$$. Perhaps you could put a pair in ????

Gary, the 350HP Volvo Penta turbo diesel makes well over 600ftlbs of torque, probably more than your Merc 600SC.
Remember horsepower is a calculated number from torque and rpm; torque is a measured value and what really counts. This engine maxes out at 3500rpm thus its 350HP rating.
I would bet with the right gearing and props, a 30' Super would run well over 70mph and maybe even 80 with this package...
As for the cost, I have no idea???
I have no desire to bolt a diesel in any boat at this stage of the game, but it was the subject of this thread...

Just an opinion, a nice set-up on a 30-Y2K would be a Volvo 8.1GXi (420HP) coupled to their DPR Drive (high-speed drive w/ X-act Steering).

I would agree, but I don't think the DPR drive is available with gasoline engines yet.
Volvo Penta did have a DPX drive offered with a 600HP BBC a few years back.
I wonder how a 30' Super would run with a Volvo dual prop?
That sounds like a good subject for a new thread...

Not to get TOO off topic but what is everyone's thoughts on a 24 with say a Marine Diesel-USA Hammerhead or Tigershark mounted to a Konrad (or any beefed up drive)? Is it worth it? Will the speeds still be respectable?
