Pat.....Yes you're correct Volvo no longer offers the DPX nor do/did they offer the DPR drive with their gas packages. Not that I'm a huge Volvo fan, but maybe it will be an option in the future!?!
Out of curiousity, I too would be interested to know how a Y2K runs with a Merc BIII or Volvo DP . I cannot imagine with its light-weight and balance, that a Y2K would benefit much from the extra stern-lift of a duoprop......but it'd probably corner great!?!............Jason

I don't think its worth it on such small boats.
Its quite costly and you wont see resale on the back end.
BTW, I do like that package alot.:)

I guess testing a 30' Y2K with a Bravo III would be easy being that most, if not all, have been built with Bravo drives. I don't believe that too many Bravo IIIs have been used in performance (60+mph) applications though. And I do know that they can not take the abuse that most of us dish out...
Now, the Volvo dual prop out drives are awesome units and to my knowledge, do run well at speeds above 60mph. Hell, we know that Batboat kicks azzzzz... :drink:

The batboats were what I had in mind while thinking of a Y2K/DPR combo.

Time to revisit this thread. As I understand there is a 600 HP Yanmar Diesel on the market. Hook that up to the Sage 8 drive........... :D Pat your good with these forumlas, HOW FAST ?????

Re: Diesel Application in a 30' Superboat

Not as fast as you might think. Diesels just can't spin the RPM's gas engines do. So your left with the only option of using transmissions. There ends up being a tradeoff w/ a single speed tranny of top speed or all around performance. A multi speed tranny might be the ticket but how much is that big ass diesel and drive package going to weigh?

I still think a V8 by marine diesel would work.
Jassman is looking into putting 3 of these into a Nortech.

Right now no one really wants a diesel HP boat. But things will be changing. Audi just won the 12hr of Sebring with one.
http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/exp...t_Sebring.html

Diesel engines can spin a much bigger prop than a bravo drive can fit. There has to be a better alternative.

A single diesel y2k should be able to run mid 60s cruise all day long.

Re: Diesel Application in a 30' Superboat

Sutphen builds their 28 Sportfish with a 315 Yanmar and claims 50+ mph. I got a price of C$40,000 for the 310 Volvo engine/drive/steering package that Pat pictured above at the Toronto Boat Show this year, so that's about U.S.$35,000. I figured converting my 26' Sutphen to a 350hp Volvo I might see 55-60 mph. The Volvo package is for a complete re-power or new installation including gauges, electronic contols, hyd. steering, props, closed cooling and exhaust. Very nice.

So who's gonna try the first diesel app at Superboat? Any takers?

I think a more interesting project and probably better suited for this boat would be 750hp split between 2 drives.
