Y2K Questions

I know everyone is happy with the Y2k here. How different is it to go to a sit down boat? Not that I have all that much time in a bolster boat either, but that is all I have driven. I am very interested in the Y2K and have had a phone call with John. I just am a little nervous about the sit down and the 7' beam.

If I wanted to build one using a GM Vortec rather than mercruiser power, you think John would accomodate? Seems like a more economical route. I know, probably a question for John.

I am going to be in Hershey, PA towards the end of this month. Looks like about a 4 hour drive to Superboat from there. Trying to talk the wife into it now.

Re: Y2K Questions

Jay i have been in stand up bolster boats for most of my boating years, all i can say is i am glad to finally glad to sit and enjoy a boat ride. NEVER did i ever feel uncomfortable sitting and driving with the 7' beam. In fact with that beam width you knife through the rough and always track correct. THE Y2K IS LIKE AN ARROW ON THE WATER !!!!! As for GM vortec JC will accomdate you with any motor, or no motor any way you want it. Jay as most Y2K onwers will tell you. THE BOAT IS ONE GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK !!!! Good luck................Gary

Re: Y2K Questions

Thanks for the info. I started reading your build thread as you had suggested before, but I haven't had time to finish. There's alot of stuff there!

It is just such a beautiful boat. I look at all the pics and drool (only a little though!). My big problem is that I want to be on the water by Memorial day 06. John said a $10k deposit is required to start the build. I can't make that deposit until Jan, which means a boat by end of season probably. If that is the way we want to go, I guess we'll just have to deal with it.

Re: Y2K Questions

I went from a 31 stand-up Sonic to the Y2K. I am very happy I made the switch! The Y2K handles rough water better, although you have to "drive" it a little more. I am much more comfortable sitting down, especially in rough conditions. A few times in the Sonic my hands came off the throttles or steering trying to balance myself. You just can't go wrong with this boat!!!!!

Oh yeah, I'm not the tallest guy on the planet either. I'm only 5'-6". Would this affect my ability to see over the faring? Geez, I sound like a little kid trying to drive my dad's pickup! :D

You can have the seats built anyway you want.

Get the "JC" seat "special", lol. I don't think John C. is much taller, and he manages.

Re: Y2K Questions

I had my seat bases lowered 2" and Im 5'10" and love it as its set up. If you leave them standard height you should be all right....By the way you should see eye-to-eye whith JC! :D You may consider some sort of foot rest though cause at the standard seat height, only my toes would touch the floor. Now my feet are flat on the floor. Superbabi's thread Im sure Gary has a picture somewhere of his foot rests which worked out well for him I believe. I drove his boat (Superbabi) and found his foot rests worked out very nicely!

Superbabi 09-07-2005 06:12 PM

Re: Y2K Questions

Jay i will dig up a photo for you of the foot rest. A must have on the standard height seat base, otherwise your feet and legs will dangle precariously , just ask anyone who has driven with JC..........Sorry JC, I just had to say that !!!!!!!!!

Re: Y2K Questions

Hey Jayhawk,
I own a 24' Super with drop down bolsters. If I'm running fast (above 60), I feal much more in control when sitting. I do like to stand when the going gets rough (2+ft waves) though. I have spoken to JC about bolsters in the Y2K. He will build it anyway you like. In fact he did deliver a Y2K with two sets of seats to a customer this spring. But from what I hear there is no need to stand in the 30' Super in any kind of water. Now if I can get one of these guys to take me for a ride...
By the way, I'm only 5'7" tall and I tower over JC... :D

jayhawk261 09-07-2005 08:01 PM

Re: Y2K Questions

Yeah, we need to get a ride in one too. I don't have anyway to make a firm decision until I'm in one. Unfortunately, no one around here has one that I know of. Pat, being 5'-7", where does the gunwale hit you?

Jay you may be in luck !!!!! Perhaps by the end of the month JC will have the DEMO BOAT out and about !!!! Rick will know fore sure.

JC will now have his own Y2K to buzz around the great south bay and fire island. A dressed up Y2K with a 496 HO !!!!

Re: Y2K Questions

Jay,
I don''t see any problem with the vortec. Fasteddy is running a Y2K with one.
As for JC's Y2K, He has the guages in the dash, and the deck is almost ready to be put on the hull. You can probably get a demo pretty soon. It's late and I had a nerve racking day, otherwise I would put the pics of his boat up. I'll try to get them up tomorrow.

Re: Y2K Questions

If we wanted to make an appointment with JC to come look at the boats while up that way later this month, where should we stay hotel wise? Being from the south, I have never stepped foot in New York and have no idea what we would be driving through to get to Superboat. We'd be coming from Hershey, PA. It looks like we'd be driving through Queens, the Bronx, all those places you read and hear bad things about. I'm not trying to stereotype, but I don't want my wife to be in fear while driving through NYC. Also, how difficult will it be to navigate through NYC?

Just spent 2 days in hershey Very nice. Take the jersey tpke to 440 to VZ bridge to the belt pkwy to southern state pkwy to wellwood ave and your their. Should be under 4 hrs from hershey. Hotel Rick would know where everybody stayed.

Re: Y2K Questions

Jay I would wait until JC has the demo boat ready. The best place to stay so you are local to factory 5 min rigging shop 10 min would be the South Bay Motel 631-842-3700. The place is fine for your needs. We spent about 10 nights there over the the Superbabi build. You really will love the water at LI !!!!!

In the ribs, definitely above my bellybutton...
The boat is plenty deep for kids if that is what your thinking...

Re: Y2K Questions

No, actually I'm thinking it looks like it could work with a set of bolsters for somone of my challenged height. Looking at the pics on the Superbabi thread, it looks like the seats are very similar to bolsters in height. Would anyone agree with this?

Not sure but I think the bolsters may be taller than the seats. These are the bolsters that went to Maryland with a Y2K. The onwer ordered the bolsters than changed his mind and went with seats.

Re: Y2K Questions

I'll let you know that the cockpit sole is around 3 or 4" higher then our old 30' Tempest. Once you try the seats, you'll say to yourself " This is the way to go"

The boat is probably deep enough for bolsters, but I would still go with seats.
JC told me that when they designed the new Y2K deck, the lines were designed around sitting not standing.
The older 30' Tempest deck was better for standing.
The Zuperboat was the last 30' built will the Tempest deck and stand/sit bolsters. Mike has since lowered the sitting position of his bolsters because he rarely stands while driving.

Re: Y2K Questions

Rick, Right now I am talking to my wife about the differences between sitting down and standing up. We went to LOTO and rode in a 25 Active Thunder and a 28 Pantera. She definitely felt more comfortable standing than sitting. We were looking at 24' boats before that, bit now 28' is the min.

How is scheduling looking? We can't put a full deposit down until mid-Jan. We wanted to be on the water by Memorial day. Not looking for anything crazy. GM Vortec 525 because I think we can get that for about the same as a Mercruiser 496HO. XR drive, hydraulic steering. Basic interior package with basic finished cabin. Is the timeline doable for something like that based on your experience? Any idea as to how hat setup will perform?

Also, do you think there will be a working boat available to look at around the 30th of this month. As I said before, we are going to be in Hershey and I'd like to head over while we're in that part of the country.

Thanks for the help!!

Good Luck With That...

JC, told me that if I wanted a new boat for 2006, to make a deposit no later than the fall of 2005.

I would say judging from the three we watched Rick build here on OSO and knowing that Superboat seems to be swamped with orders, 6-8 months would be more realistic... :drink:

Over Eight Months For Me With The Custom Engine.

Re: Y2K Questions

As for my part. I can build the Y2K between 6 and 8 weeks. The rest is a waiting game. We waited forever for Superbabi's motor. Then the coring materials were backordered over a month. I blew JC's out in 4 weeks !! Once the deck goes on I need another week and it's done. The next Y2K already has the stringers in and the deck cored. Luckily, all the boats going to BC Canada are unrigged. We have another order for a yellow one from Florida. But today I was contacted about putting in a 1200 hp turbine in a Y2k to have ready by spring. Took the measurements, and it looks like we can make it work.
All I can say is we have 3 orders, 2 of which are unrigged. and th4e Yellow one is a standard 496 package, nothing special.

jayhawk261 09-09-2005 09:28 PM

Re: Y2K Questions

1200hp Turbine?!? That should rock! why not 2? :evilb:

I'm going to give John a call and question him some more. I hope he doesn't think I'm wasting his time by asking all the questions and such. I think for the wife to give the greenlight on one, she would just need a quck run in one. Is JC typically ok with a saturday phone call? I know he forwards the # to his mobile, but I don't want to interrupt a saturday.

Thanks Rick!

Although, I bugged him today with a question about my old 97 and he was quite friendly.

You should be able to call him. Rob ( Huntington Beach) flew in last night, and is meeting JC today (Sat). I'm meeting him at the shop at 12:00.

Re: Y2K Questions

Called JC today and had a good conversation with him. He really stresses the Mercruiser package mostly for the warranty. I think he's probably right. He said his boat would not be ready by the end of the month, so we will probably have to make a special trip out there to look at it.

I think I have some good info now, and I think the boat is in my price range. All I have to do now is make sure it fits us as far as running goes and my decision will be made.

Thanks for your help everyone. Maybe in the next few months Rick will be posting pics of my hull being laid up!!

One thing I did forget to ask JC was how much extra a "SUPERBOAT" hull side graphic would be. Or do you guys think it would be better to have something done locally after delivery?

SUPERSTITIOUS 09-10-2005 09:33 PM

Re: Y2K Questions

He uses a local guy Sticker point. I believe he used him for the Superboat logo the same as in my avatar for my boat. Anything other than that I'm sure JC would let you deal with the guy direct to get just what you wanted. Krakmeup did a wonderful job locally down in Texas with "Once Bitten". As far as doing it in the gelcoat, I wouldn't recommend it

jayhawk261 09-10-2005 11:40 PM

Re: Y2K Questions

I'm talking about the BIG "SUPERBOAT" down the side like so many seem to have. I think it is a great looking graphinc. Maybe with the US Flag draped through the letters? The flag is done to death these days, but it really says something. It never goes out of style.

I do like how the logo in your avatar is typically at the back on each side. it looks good as well.

I don't think I want anything in the gel voat for sure. How are you liking the black hull OH-ZONE? Any fear about water spots?
