Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Pat I'm thinking the same thing ??? I would only do that with a FULL STAGGER.
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
And then race it. :D
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
I'm not going to be much help for details as to how its all goning to come together yet. I'm not sure JC even has it all figured out but we came to the conclusion that to get the CG of the boat right you had to move the engine forward... Once you do that there isn't enough room to service or even install the biatches, so staggering the small blocks was the decision. This boat is getting set up to go fast in big water...
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rob a FULL STAGGER???
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Yep Cohen said there would still be room for 3 people to sit in back so thats the plan as of now... I'm thinking of using 5 buckets anyway so the engine bulkhead is going to get a redesign to make room for the forward engine... The more we talked about it the more excited John got about the idea, Seems like a trick set up to me.
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Another reason for the stagger is with the side-by-side set up you cant use headers, tall deck blocks, or really anything that makes the engine wider then stock; it just doesnt fit. Rick can probably chime in with a better idea as to how its all going to work and how much space is moving where etc, etc, etc,
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
so the rear bulk can stay the same ?? and still acess to the front of the forward motor ????
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
LOL... your killing me Gary, this is the exact conversation I had with JC... first idea was to make the back seat removable to get to the forward mounted engines but that wasn't going to work 100%.. long story short by the time we figured out how to make it work it was going to be the same as moving/customizing the bulkhead... if that makes sense?
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rob I'm not sure I follow you, no problem, all will unfold soon as the project begins. I will pay very close attention. There may another Y2K in my future. :D Now what motors/drives are you thinking ???? This is one great project Rob........................ :D :D :D

Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Shopping this weekend @ the show... If I had to pick today would be custom N/A Big Cube small blocks (500hp each) and Bravo XR's on ITS mounts ;)

Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
You say it like your going to see them at 100 mph's. :D
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Damn !!! Not ANOTHER Hatch mold !!! LOL
Yeah, Coen came into the shop all amped out. I mean the guy is really excited, This is going to be one mean machine. |

400+ cube SBCs, aluminum heads, headers, EFI... :D ITS, Bravo XRs, -2" sportmaster lowers... :D =100+mph... :evilb: |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
This is gonna make some interesting reading. Now, what about the fuel tank/s?
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
The tank can easily be moved forward.
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rob,
Started cutting out the foam coring for the deck. We'll be bedding the forward section of the deck tomorrow. Rick PS I'll have pictures !!! |

Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rick, I was thinking... whats the capacity of the gas tank, I wanna guesstimate the range of the boat with twins? Also what are the odds of getting some dimensions for the engine compartment, cockpit, transom width. Need to start mocking up the motors and drives someday to make sure they fit when we send them to you. If these are more John questions let me know and I'll call him.
Thanks, Rob |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
One more for ya.. how about a sick twin intake hatch w/ the opening facing toward the rear. And have the scoops staggered like the engines?
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Hypothetically... what class would this boat race in?
|

I believe Jcap ran in P-3, Fasteddie F-1. The rules seem to change from year to year... |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Oh Rob,
Your boat was the talk of the party... :evilb: |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Oh do tell!!!!!!!
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Well Rob,
Being that I'm a design engineer, I asked Rick a number of about how the stringers will be laid out and how the "staggered" engines will mount. There will be a large stringer running down the center and the engines will mount off set over the center stringer toward the center of the boat. One engine will mount forward allowing for the drives to move closer inboard. Just like those $1,000,000 full stagger 42' "Poker Run/Race" boats... :D There is of course more to the new design then my typing skills will allow me to describe. John and Rick are old school, lots of sketches on cocktail napkins, but you are in good hands... :drink: |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
I See A Mock Setup In The Near Future. This Is Going To Have To Happen Before The Tank Goes In. I Like The I.t.s. Idea Close Together. And Xr Uppers But You Mite Need Short Lowers. Its Going To Need Real Motor Plates. I Would Also Use Aluminam Head Small Blocks To Save On Weight And Mount The Batteries By The Transom Behind The Stagger To Move Some Of The Weight To The Back. Now for the scoops to me less is more but I do like the rear facing like the fountains had. But not to big. Do a flat hatch with 2 small harwoods glassed in.

Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Engines:
383 or 427 SBC Aluminum heads/ Exhaust 500+ hp & 6500redline Thats the basic idea so far, won't have all the specs or designs done for another 2-3weeks The drives are coming down to a debate between the XR's and the Imco SC's... Price will probably decide which ones go on the boat... Sportmaster lowers aren't a bad idea, some of the preliminary guess's are a top speed well over 90 so they would help. Hey Rick, when do you think would be a good time to fly out there and go over the boat? I'll give John a call and get his opinion, just wanted yours as well. |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rob, I was speaking with coen, he said the rear bulk head/seat would come up ( towards bow ) about 1' for the full stagger. I think thats still enough room back there for 3 people with leg room. Well worth any loss of space when she runs 100 mph with 500 x's 2 on regular drives.

Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Sounds like we gonna have some fun this year Rob! Poker Runs, here we come! :D
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
The Shorter The Drive The Lower The Motors Can Be Helping The Center Of Gravity. On Motors Nothing Can Replace Cubic Inch But Some Combinations Are Better Then Others. Also You Dont Want To Be Doing New Lifters And Spring Every Year. Im Guessing You Found A Motor Man That You Trust ?

At 6500rpm, the valve-train components are not going to last vary long. |

Anyway, don't go for more than a 3.75" stroke in a standard deck block or the piston will eat themselves up do to side loading. This limits you to 383 cubes in a 350 block or 406 cubes with a 400 block. I don't have any info on tall deck small blocks, but I still don't think more stroke would be a good thing. As for the cam and valve train parts, the engine builder I work with uses Crower cams in all his small block race engines. I stopped by to see Glen today. He had a 355 cube circle track engine on the dyno. It made 436HP at 6500rpm. That engine was basically a stock cast iron head 350 with a solid flat tappet cam. He did say that an engine like that would not last vary long in a boat though... |
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Your on the same track I am Pat... I like to sound like I know all the in's and out's of these motors but I really only know enough to be dangerous. I'll let the motor guru whos building these things dictate what goes in them and what they end up being. I just gave him the peramiters and he does the rest. Hopefully next week I'll have the parts list so we can start rounding everything up!!!!

How about some Ford power Rob! 425HP from 289ci at 6200rpm. Even idles at 750 rpm. Technoligy now a days is cool!
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Next your gonna tell me to go with that honda V-tec and nitrious... J/K that is one clean engine!!!!
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
I would but you have to go all American Iron. :D
|
Re: Rob, Huntington Beach !!
Rob, is the stock 6.2 mercs with the whipples an option for you ????
