|
I just spent more then that for an outboard, to go 5 MPH more then what I was going.
Speed+ $ How much you want to spend is how fast yopur gonna go. I guess my Mako is gonna beat ya. ;) |
Is the HO really 5K more ? ( i dont think so ! ) I think JC just wants to create seperation between the 24 and the Y2K
|
Kevin,
Sorry to get on your ccase about the motor. A 496mag is a great set up. Hope you get it on time. |

Congrats! Awesome to have another 24 owner around. Seriously though, really wake that boat up and for 425-500hp. That is when the real fun begins! :D What are some of the ideas for your boat?
|
Put a 525 in the boat and be done, its only money, right ?????

Hi Kevin,
Welcome to the 24' Super club... I'm vary excited to see Rick build a 24'. Is seems only 30s have been rolling out for the past few years. I've owned 24 Super for 5 years now and I love it!!!:D The 496Mag is a great engine package. It makes just as much power as the old 502mag I have in my boat. Yes, your boat should crack 75mph. There is always time to give it a little more kick down the road... As for options, it's all about how much you are willing to spend... Two options I would suggest are a full hydraulic helm with external steering rams and solid engine mounts. Do not just use the Merc internal power steering or the Merc adjustable engine mounts. The external ram steering makes these boat a pleasure to drive at high speed. The solid engine mounts will keep the engine aligned if you run hard in the rough. If you have questions, fire away. I've gotten lots of help from the crew on this sight... Good Luck with your new Toy! |
Kevin great first boat . Enjoy the build. If your 6ft or over the bolsters mite be alittle low. Im 6ft and didnt like standing in them. What about buckets. Rick is making some new ones and the mold looks real good. I hope you get it when promised. John better hire some help. Lets just clone Rick

Kevin,
I have an 05 with the 496 MAG and I have to say it was a good choice. I went back and forth with the thought of the HO but the additional cost at the time was not an option. I am very happy with the way the boat runs. I completely agree with Pat, go with a full hydraulic system now. Money well spent. Oh yea and the solid mounts are also a good idea, I am having to check my merc mounts twice a year. You can always add the Raylar kit at a later date to go to 500hp. T |
Nice choice... where will you be running it.. N Shore or S Shore?
I would not even consider running a boat w/o full hydraulic external steering... stability and safety at speed. worth every penny. Solid mounts are not $, so i'd agree w/ Pat. And I don't know how tall you are, but the buckets may be a great idea. The 375 is fine, raylar can always take you where you want to be. and you can always upgrade the drive later. Congrats, and enjoy... but seriously... consider the steering. |
damn T, great minds think alike...

Im 6'0 so i told john to give me the bolsters bc I like the idea of being able to stand when I want but I AM also concerned about the wind blasting me in the eyes----I wear contact lenses and my eyes are very sensative so i want to take that into consideration and i would prefer to have a little shelter from the wind. I am considering throwing a small windscreen (a la cigarette top gun) on the fairing to buffer the wind a little more. So honestly I have no idea if i should go bolsters or buckets. I will definatly do solid engine mounts but do the vibrate the boat more???? and I already specd the boat with full hydraulic steering

Solid engine mounts will not cause any more vibration. Most vibration will come from the prop at low rpm, especially 3 blade props. |
Try to get a ride in a y2k to see if you like to run sitting down.
I think it may inspire a bit of confidence to be sitting deeper in the cockpit. There are plenty of glasses/goggles to help w/ wind. Check the GD forum, there was just a thread on it. |
Kevin,
You can see my boat on the Superboat web site. The one with the blue and yellow stripes. I changed out all the yellow interior pieces for blue and replaced the stock cabin doors with custom wood. I will post a interior pic later. http://www.superboatonline.com/24.html |

IMO, the 24 is definitely a SIT-Down boat. I have the bolsters in mine and NEVER stand. I'm 5'10" and sitting or standing, the wind is tough in a 24.
Speed wise.....the 375HP will get you 75 only on the best days. I had a 454 Mag (385) and I saw 75 once. The norm was 73-74. Now I have a 496HO and have seen 80 once or twice, 77-78 is the norm. I would bite the bullet and go with a FULL steering system. I started with an add-on, converting it to full made a HUGE difference. I'd recommend K-planes too. I agree with the others about the offshore mount. I've been plagued with motor mount issues since I've owned my boat. |

280 K-planes or the equivalent from Trick, Dana, and others. |
I agree on everything said so far. Our avanti (similar to the SB) has old but tall bolsters. I am 6'1" and sitting there is a breewe but stading I get blasted.

I will take care of ALL the details. I had a nice time talking with ya. Not to worry, your boat "Will" be one of a kind. |

Like I said if the money was there I would have done the same and gone with the HO. However Rick, I am not bored with the MAG. :D |

However Rick, I am not board with the MAG. :D To spite similar HP ratings, they do make a lot more power than the old 454Mag and 502Mag engines. I'm on my 3rd year with a 502Mag and sure I would like to go faster, but... |

These hulls seem to hit a wall at about 80mph and it takes a lot of power to push them beyond that. Dave M's boat runs 78mph anyday of the week with a stock prop. If he sent his prop to BBlades for a little love, he'd see 80 no problem. A 525 is only going to push the boat 82-84mph. Those headers would sure look nice though...:drink: |
