Lets spin the 496 up to 5500 and see how long it will last !! If I had to pick choose between Garys 600 or Carys 600 You know good internals are key !! Gary wins

Gary,
I have done some reading/research on the new 496cube/8.1L engines. Left in their stock form they are great engines. They make more power and are more efficient than the 454OH and 502HO engines they replace.
There are two potential problems when bolting a supercharger onto a stock GM base 496 though. They have cast pistons and a cast crank. Cast pistons do not hold up as well as forged pistons in supercharged applications. They will melt down; it's not a question if, but when. The cast crank in the 496 has been said to be good for about 600HP by some of the "experts". The 454HO and 502HO engines, of the past, have forged pistons and a forged crank making them better candidates for supercharging.
Now, I've made an assumption in my earlier posts that Cary just bolted on the Whipple. He may have changed the pistons and crank; if that is the case, it should be in his add.

Well sure Zup, you get what you pay for. The Merc 600 is the old school 502 base engine with special forged pistons for supercharging and a forged crank good for 750HP. Certainly not a mass produced engine like the 496Mag.

I fear that we are bashing Cary's boat a little. This is not our intention at all. However, I think that a number of us believe that the price tag on this beauty is a bit high...

How much woulda Y2K w/ 496mag HO, XR, external steering, monster gauges, & basic electronics cost? and how fast w/ the new hull?
I bet less than 90k and 75-77mph? I'd go new. 5yr warranty.

Can anyone answer these questions... ballpark?

Speed: The old hull went 72mph, new hull ? maybe 76mph.
Pice: 75-85K depending upon options.

Not to sir things up G, but in today's market, I don't believe that either of your boats are worth anywhere near 90K.

My 2005 Y2K, 496MagHO, top speed ever, 74.1 gps, runs all day long at 71-72 through most seas. Bolting on a whipple is fine (I've done two sets of twin 496's personally on brand X boats where the owners know only two throttle positions and the second one is WOT- both these boats are running without fail, abusive use, and well into 100-200 hours on the blowers with NO FAILURES - the caveat is boost level and being sure fuel pressure is properly maintained at reasonable levels, e.g boost under 5-6 psi).

I probably will bolt on a large whipple (but tune to low boost levels) this winter to my 250+ hour 496, run it till she pukes, then build other power to match the larger sized whipple.

Pricing? Call JC...... you CANNOT beat SB value still....

My two cents...... :D

Ok then, i'm guessing 90k is a bit hi then.
For even $, i'd lose the extra 6mph, and gain a warranty and have it buit... myyyyyyyyyyyyyy waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!
