A lot of it has to do with the boat. You can break the drive with 600hp behind a really heavy boat as easily as you will break one with 1200hp on a light boat.

The y2k is a light boat and it stays hooked up real good, with 800hp on a bravo xr style drive the key to making it live for a while is in driving technice,no full throttle starts push throttles up slowly in the mid range, don't slam them, change gear lube every 15-20hrs,too much metal on magnet need to tear down and inspect.I use amsoil synthetic gear lube, seems to hold up better than merc oil,Gary if the water gets rough you need to take it easy on it,real easy to blow one then.I have found some owners can make it work, some can't.Also what i have found that brand new drives will hold up much better than wore out rebuilt ones, during the winter you can find some good deals on some new in box units, most used xr drives for sale have been on big power and have limited life span, thats wy they are for sale. Its no fun being towed in with a blown drive.
