Replacement for our 24' Superboat

1 Attachment(s)
Hello to you all,
As most of you may know, I had an accident with my 24' Superboat back in October and she is a total lose. I have since bought the boat back from my insurance company to salvage the engine, drive, and other parts for a possible project boat. I am also selling off parts that I will not use to help build my new boat funds.
I have a little story about the name of our 24' Superboat before I get to the real subject at hand. The name of our 24' Superboat is "For Now". There was a time period, approximately 10 years, which I bought and sold 7 boats before I bought our 24' Super. My wife said, as I showed her my purchase some 5 years ago, "We need to name this boat For Now." Well this seems a bit ironic now after I owned this boat longer than any other to date and had no real intensions to replace her until it became necessary after the event on October 20th.

Our next boat will likely be between 26 and 30 feet and be powered by a single I/O.
One option I am considering would be to purchase a new hull with interior and rig it myself with the running gear for my wrecked Superboat.
I have a 502MagMPI that I rebuilt approximately 150 hours ago. The Bravo 1 gimble and drive were new in 2004. I have 280 K-planes and Imco twin ram full hydro steering. There are a few other parts I can reuse as well.
The boat manufactures and models I have enquired about thus far include:
26' and 28' Joker
28' Thundermist
29' Kryptonite
26' Sutphin
And, the 30' Superboat

Pat McPherson 11-27-2007 09:14 PM

Another option, and the way I'm leaning, would be to purchase a use boat without power or that is in need of a repower.
Boats that I have been researching to date include:
28' Sunsation
28' Velocity
28' Pantera
27' and 29' Warlock
27' Activator
25' Active Thunder
And yes, the 30' Superboat...

CMC 11-27-2007 09:18 PM

What is a Thundermist ?
I can vouch for the Sutphen, just have Richie Jr. get the interior done at PPI, ( I told him all about it).
I dont think the 25 Active Thunder molds are around any more.
I'm kind of in the same delema. I want larger than 25 and not be a slug, but I dont have to be the fastest either. Keep us posted on your progress !:drink:

I have a friend that works for a division of Brunswick and sells to lots of boat builders in RI. Thundermist is a manufacture of all kinds of custom boats. They have a 28' that they are retooling the deck mold on. If I want to be first I could get the boat done for a lot less $$ and have some input as well.
I contacted Richie Jr a couple of weeks ago and have not heard back. I sent him another e-mail today.
The 25' Active Thunder I looked at is a used boat.

Any other suggestions, I'm all ears...:cool-smiley-011:

Pat, all sounds like a good plan.
The Joker would be a inexpensive way to go, as well as SB.
There is a 28pantera for sale for 49000 w/ innovation motor.
maybe offer w/o power? wont be too fast though.

CMC 11-27-2007 10:13 PM

Pat, Richie doesnt do EMails ........

Superbabi 11-28-2007 05:07 AM

Pat, there is only one real choice in the above boats........................Y2K !!!!!!:D

Well he did e-mail me back the first time. If I don't here back in a couple of days, I'll call him again.

TeamSaris 11-28-2007 06:15 AM

Never ridden in a Y2K.There still awesome.:D
Driven a 26 Sutphen with eggbeaters.Fast and great in rough water.
If you find an Avanti PM me.
Sunsation and Velocity are good boats. The Velocity wont run with the others in rough water
IF you want a Sunsation talk to Charlie at Mahopac Marine here on OSO. Mention Jason and Johnny at Performance Marine. You will get one hell of a deal with them

Yes Gary, I know where you stand...:cool-smiley-011:
I will not likely buy a new one though.
Contrary to popular belief, it is the most expensive of the new hulls I listed.
Well, maybe not, I have not heard from Sutphin yet.

Thanks for the input.
I have not ridden in a Y2K either...:(
There is a 1997 28' Sunsation here in CT that was for sale last week. I know the boat and met owner, but now I can't find it...

Yes, the 26' Joker hull is one hell of a deal.
The 28' Joker and 30' Super hulls are awesome but are more $$ than I have budgeted at this point.
A 28' Pantera would probably only go 60 with my engine, but I'd be fine with that for a year or 2. I do have everything to turn my engine into a 500 when the time is right.

Pure Energy 11-28-2007 09:00 AM

Hey Pat!!

Take your time, lots of boats out there. Here's my list for you

28 pantera
28 joker
29 kryptonite
27 Activater

Not in that order though

Also, what about the Extreme???

You know how I stand on my Y2K!!!

What about the one for 42k in NJ? Pull the 496 and sell it off and pop in your motor. I know it is a stretch, but who knows!!

Thanks for the input K...:cool-smiley-011:

So your list would not include the 28 Velocity.
Yes, I do understand that this boat will not run the rough as well as some of the others being that it is really only 26+ ft long. It would be a significant upgrade from my 24' Superboat though since it weighs at least 1200lbs more is 3' longer.

The Extreme is not on I had thought about.
Hmmm....

That other Y2K in NJ has been sitting in salt water rotting for the past 3 seasons...

TexomaPowerboater 11-28-2007 01:07 PM

I'd go with the 28 pantera, a race set up would be a lot cheaper. Second would be the Y2K. Joker's site has the 26 advertised as being heavier than the 28, which may also be a good option.

I know, you have been inviting me to come down for 2 or 3 years now. Thank you...:drink:

TeamSaris 11-28-2007 03:11 PM

Kryptonite? I knew of one that was for sale. Pretty cheap too...
Not sure if it still is.bernes29scarab was interested in the boat but bought a formula

Stormrider 11-28-2007 03:21 PM

Extreme will be $.
but worth a call.

Superbabi 11-28-2007 03:23 PM

Pat, did I say this yet....................Y2K, should be your only choice !!!!!:grinser010:

t-islands 11-28-2007 03:58 PM

I am going to have to put a vote in for the Kryptonite. I like it so much I bought one. I can offer you a ride in the spring.

There all good choices though, I looked at many of the same.

ChristianGott 11-28-2007 07:24 PM

superbabi....
have you suggested a y2k to pat?...:D:D:ernaehrung004:

pat,
if you want to retrofit my rumrunner for a single...i'm for sale..better yet, can your drive be paired with another one, sell the BBC and drop in maybe 383 strokers?...
if so, and your trailer will hold it..we can talk if you want...
i've got a guy who, for some weird reason, just wants my trailer...go figure:rolleyes:

GEORGE YURICK 11-28-2007 07:42 PM

Hi Chris,
I actually have two Bravo 1 drives sitting in my basement but I'm not looking for a twin engine. Been there done that, no thanks...:grinser010:

OL40SVX 11-29-2007 03:53 PM

Pat, from a friend to a friend I'd say don't go with the Velocity or Sunsation. There's a reason none are around here!! The Sutphen would be an awesome ride. Keep on trying to contact Rich Jr. If you can't get a hold of him, we can help!. The Kryptonite and Joker are nice as well, but not very inexpensive.

ChristianGott 11-29-2007 06:29 PM

hi pat...
do you have the whole deals..drives, gimbals, etc.?
i'll keep the 350 mags..but the bravo conversion discussion would be interesting...lots of people talk about it, but doing it for the record would be cool...
pm me if you want to chat about it....
thanks
c

Used 26 Sutphens with singles are few and far between and finding one in a pleasure version without power may have you on the sidelines for years. Your choices with that boat would be to convert an older twin to single or buy a new hull and power it with your stuff, which doesn't always make sense. Most of the older 26's I come across are mid to late 80's boats and most are in pretty good shape for their age.

CMC 11-30-2007 11:13 AM

I know a guy who has the last 26 Built. It currently has a 525. I know he would sell it perhaps with or without the motor. But he always wants TOP dollar for his stuff. The boat does have awesome paint.

I spoke to Rich Jr. today. He is on vacation with the family in Fla and did not have a chance to get back to me. He will build the old style 26' as a single or the new streched to 27' version. I'll know more on Monday.

CMC 11-30-2007 09:42 PM

What is he going to do to stretch it? I didnt know about this.

The boat will be 1 foot longer. He was on vacation so I didn't ask many questions. He'll get back to me/us next week.

CMC 12-01-2007 02:55 PM

I didn't know he had plans to do that. Keep me posted . Thanks

cgarrett 12-04-2007 11:50 AM

I had a 96 24 Superboat.
My friend has a 25 Active Thunder with a 502 that will run 70 GPS. These boats have a deep cockpit and a large cabin for a 25 foot boat. In rough water I would rather be on the Active.
