Hmmm factory merc warrenty 80 plus mph ? 598/801 90 plus mph no warrenty ! What to do ?

HuntingtonBeach 07-20-2007 10:38 AM

If you want the warrenty then get a bigger factory motor...

Custom 598= 40K

Merc 850= 85K

You could have a spare motor and still be ahead ;)

It's all relative... if 80 is fast enough then you can have a nice long warrenty, to go faster you have to give something up. Your not going to hit 100mph in this hull with standard factory motors.

Pics ARE worth a thousand words

TOO COOL!!!!!!!!

Way to go!!!! Details, details please!!

FASTERDAMITT 07-23-2007 02:03 PM

I won P-5, finished 10th overall with the assitance of Laveycraft's AMF/Raylar Brian Devlin as navigater. POPRA's first race of the season. Brian had some problems with his boat so I asked if he wanted to be a passenger in mine. We had a blast!:evilb: We ran his numbers and sponsors (AMF/Raylar 513) on my boat so he could get points if we did any good. The race was from Long Beach to one end of Catalina Island, run along the coast to the other end and back to Long beach harbor. Approx 75 miles I was told.
I had to keep it under 75mph the whole race so I did not breakout of class. That was a little challenging itself. The Superboat was impressive to Brian, I and many others. To me, It was not that rough out there. Some boats were getting alot of airtime.
I want to thank Rick (FX) for building such a great boat.
Brain Devlin for a so so, navigator:D
Kevin cooper (Team Lavey, POPRA)for the last minute race entry.
John Haggin (AMF) for the great race sponsorship

Just OK...
You won the first race you ever entered...:evilb:
So will you be adding dual throttle and trim controls or you going to stick to running the boat solo?

FASTERDAMITT 07-23-2007 03:42 PM

If the solo thing is working why change.....unless it's in the rule books.

jayhawk261 07-23-2007 04:29 PM

Way to go!! Congrats!!

Superbabi 07-23-2007 04:38 PM

Tom,what are you using prop wise?? Left or Right.

FASTERDAMITT 07-23-2007 05:18 PM

Thanks Jayhawk231! Garry I'm running a 28 Bravo1 right.

z.zuperboat 07-24-2007 08:13 AM

Congrats on the WIN. You know now your hooked !! HA HA
Spinning a 28 right and going over 90 you have to be spinning the motor right around 6100 correct ?
Gary their has to be way around the computer. You know if anybody can do it ,it would be ZUL.

Mike,
I am running just at 90 with the 28 Bravo1 at 6000rpm I always carry a full boatload is why i run a smaller prop. I ran a 32 when I hit 94 at around 5350rpm I think.
The racing may continue with some sponsorship. I don't intend on running my boat this hard without some $$ support to buy engines and drives. Any idea who that could be?

Thanks,
Tom

HuntingtonBeach 07-24-2007 01:49 PM

Congrats Tom, I didn't think you were coming out because I never heard from ya.

Perfect day for racing though, glad you took the win on your first try!!!

Thanks buddy. I was so busy getting ready for the race I was confused. I had to

make hull numbers
get nonskid to tape the deck
get duct tape to hold down all the cleats
borrow approved helmets and life jackets
borrow 100' tow rope
make a second kill teather
get inspected twice
chase down everyone
lotsa phone calls
medical physical
entertain two kids!
All on saturday evening when I learned I was able to race.

z.zuperboat 07-25-2007 05:51 AM

Tell me your kids are older and you sent one to the store for numbers and tape, and the other to get jackets and helmets. Your doctor does house calls !!

I can see how that might get a little stressful!!!

FASTERDAMITT 07-25-2007 01:22 PM

Kids are 12, 15, 17, they attempted to help out. After all the getting ready it really was worth it as I crossed the finish line. Racing in the pack at the start was great, I wanted to put the hammer down and run with the P-4's but I had to stay under 75mph for my class, once I got the lead I kept looking at the gages over an over. Waiting for something to go wrong. Then the fuel gage was bouncing from empty to half full at the halfway point of the race. I ended up with a quarter tank left after all. What a feeling! The Superboat was awsome!

Run a smaller prop and set the rev limit to keep you in class.
I think that is what most do.
You will have monster acceleration with the smaller prop, not that you don't now.

FX10 07-28-2007 09:33 AM

Tom,
What are you taching at 75 MPH ??

FASTERDAMITT 07-28-2007 01:19 PM

It varied alot because of the water conditions. I ran the tabs down quit a bit to keep the prop in the water the best I could. I would say somewhere in the mid 4k range. I was thinking to put a rev limiter in to keep it there intead of changing props when racing.

Congrats Tom, I got your email, try running a 26b1 or a 25Q4,
with a 5600 chip, should be a lot easyer on your drive, If anything works out for the Worlds you can not be able to go over 75, it not just holding back, preaently I'm running 150lbs in the nose and 100lbs ing the storage locker under the Vbirth in rough water if that helps.

Eddie

FASTERDAMITT 07-31-2007 06:31 PM

Congrats to your race results as well! I was wondering what weight to run up front. Since I had no experience with the different balance I decided to just run it as is. I'll take you up on your suggestion with the prop and limiter for next time.
Thanks

Dude! Sweet! 09-24-2007 06:02 PM

Hey just picked up the new copy of HotBoat. That's one sharp looking Laveycraft you have there!

:chimp:

By the way, great run, sorry I didn't get to swing by and say howdy in person. You doing the Poker Run?

FASTERDAMITT 09-29-2007 01:17 AM

I want to do the poker run so bad but my tow vehicle is in the shop and i tried all day to find someone that could tow and
co-pilot for me. No luck as the run is in the morning. I wonder if my friends don't like the way I drive the boat!!!!!:cool-smiley-011:

40,000 FOR A NA 598 801HP who was the builder, east coast seems to be around 16,000 to 20,000. with good parts. I am thinking of having my next motor be a 572 or 598 the blower motors seem to be a lot more and merc no thanks had a hp 500. made it in to a 509 with 670hp on its last dyno from 650.
