Re: Superboat Speeds ???

sorry forgot to vote! im a little slow these days!
Your mystery guy has the boat that was in the rigging shop for awhile , yes i think yellow and blue stripe, john had a blower motor from mrd in it originaly claimed it would do 100 mph but never got it dialed in , John stripped the boat and sold it bare hull, this guy bought it and had mrd build the same motor as mine 509/blowershop250 he wasnt happy with speeds (86mph) and the motor blew with very few hours (less than 20) the same thing happened to my mrd 509 it sucked a valve at 20 hours! I am not pickin on mrd its just the facts! He had zul rebuild it with dual quads instead of single dominater and it now runs about 89 90. Nice guy ,met him at the Gull a few times.
Faster dammit ,
if you check back a few threads on Y2K props, I have found that a deeper drive height gave me more speed , and better bow lift, I know we all have been taught deeper is slower but trail and error have proven for my Y2K deeper is fastewr and better handling

Thanks JCAP, That's what I was reading. Deeper the better. Well, maybe!

It's called multi-variable optimization....."balance" in simpler terms.

Have you guys seen this yet? I put a post on General discussion about boat MFG's in NY area. I got something started. This is what JC Performance posted just now!

(The best Y2K went 78 with a hp525.Ran 75 or 76 when i was next to it.Activator with hp525 went 90 mph)

There is an activator in my neighborhood with a JC 500hp and didnt go 90.now it has a procharger on it and I hear it goes 90 now.Hp is unknown to me.I would think anywhere from 650-700.

Re: Superboat Speeds ???

Hey guys.... What power would be needed to get the 34 in the upper 90's or tripple didgets? If you wanted a Superboat and wanted that kind of speed what is the setup?

Last year I had an amazing amount of fun watching a 24 with a 502 in it dancing in some real snot in the upper 60's. I also saw a 30 in the low to mid 70's. You guys know who you are, so yo an answer the pole...

No doubt the Superboats crush the waves, but what does it take for the higher speeds??

Steve

Steve,
We have a 34 in the shop being rigged with 525's. Should do in the mid to upper 90's. Come check it out if you want.

Great to hear your coming Steve!!! :drink:

My best boating pal and I are both upping the anti this year.
He has a 97 29' Fountain that we are installing a 20hour old rebuilt 525SC.
I am rebuilding his old 502MPI for my 24 Super.
Hopefully I'll be moving up to the vary fast category.
Should be a great summer... :D

Now if the ice on the River would just melt... :(

I would love to Rick, but don't know where it is. I drive by the place down the road from Tankilff Marine, but only saw John there once, two years ago. I should have listened to him more at the time.... But I am thinking for what to do for next year...

ZZ, you and I have talked about the 28 Pantera and 28 Cig before... Old School and Heavy! They need lots of power to push them.
Fullthrottle525 here in CT just got his new 28' Pantera with a 525Merc. I think she runs in the low 70s... Absolutely gorgeous boat, but 8-10mph slower than a 30' Super. :drink:

FASTERDAMITT 02-22-2005 08:21 PM

Re: Superboat Speeds ???

I saw that before also. That's why I'm on this forum instead of Pantera's. Love the boat though.

Those Panteras are heavy. A 24 with a 250 O/B ran 65...compare that to my 71mph 250 SUPERBBOAT  . I'll dig up the link for the non-believers  . Not saying they aren't built well...just heavy. I like the new 36 SURVIVOR....

Pat McPherson 02-23-2005 09:20 AM

Re: Superboat Speeds ???

My 1997 24' Super is 150-200lbs lighter than my 1989 24' Pantera; I had them both on the scale...
When I first got my 89 Pantera, she was powered by a 330HP(at the crank) 7.4 carb motor with stock through the prop exhaust. She would run about 60mph. I installed Imco stainless risers and through hull muffler tips.
She gained another 2-3mph. Then I added an Edelbrock intake and K&N filter. Another1-2mph to a top speed of 64-65...
Sold the Pantera and bought my 24' Super without power. I installed a stock Volvo Penta 7.4Gi rated 310HP at the prop. She ran a best of 67mph with the same 3 blade prop. My 24' Super is about 2mph faster than my Pantera was with similar power.
This year I'll be bolting in some real power hoping to crack the 75mph mark... :D

24 Pantera with blowered 454 425h.p. ...70mph (in classifieds).
DAVE M would smack that silly http://img107.exs.cx/img107/1774/mikeyslap25ti.gif

- 24'SB/496H.O. combo I think will break 80.
-74.1 in a 30...24' is like 1500lbs. lighter?...I would think at least 10mph faster.....
-I know he ran best of 75'ish with 385h.p. ...but maybe more torque will offset the speed ratio of the 40 more h.p. jump!
GO DAVE M. http://img107.exs.cx/img107/3275/checkeredflagg4wj.gif

Re: Superboat Speeds ???

Hey Bash,
If someone has a blower motor in a 24' Pantera and it only tops out at 70, something is vary wrong with that setup...
The fellow that bought my old 24 Pantera installed a 600HP MRD 454mag blower motor. That boat was running in the mid 80s last I new...
I do agree that a 24' Super is faster than a 24' Pantera, I owned them both...
A 30' Super is one hell of an effecient hull in the 60-80mph range. SB30's boat runs in the high 60s maybe 70 with a 375HP/496mag. We ran side by side in the CT river run last year... A 28' Pantera with a single 496HO tops out in the low 60s, at least 10mph slower than a 30' Super... :D

Hey Bash,

Using a slip factor of 10 on the propcalc, I'm coming up with 79.5. Time will tell, I was hoping to start testing this weekend but the weather took a turn for the worse.

Hey DAVEhttp://img139.echo.cx/img139/1026/wave9ht.gif
Hows she running??? Hours??? Any #'s at all to report???
I just ran side by side with the yellow new style 21 SB... 75.5 on my hendheld $99.99 GPS ...& his Gaffrig GPS SPEEDO is recalling 78.3...now that means my best of 78.4 may really have been over 80??? I gotta run two GPS's next time now. BASH may have some bigger #'s than expected. I think with the right prop & all...you should break the 80 mark...

Yes, '98 was the first year with the step. I think the step might be worth 1-2 mph over the non-step.

Could be...
My 1997 straight V, 415HP/502MagMPI, Bravo I 28p prop, best of 76.4mph.
The newer hull not only has the step, but it has a bit of pad and larger lifting strakes. I doubt the step does anything as these boat dance on the last 3-4ft of the hull. The pad and larger strakes likely do help.
T and D, What motor rpm you getting? I'm at about 4800...
