Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Well I'm going to winterize today to spite the 58° and sunny forecast... :(
I did take the "For Now" out for a blast yesterday before dragging her home... :D Bruce, the owner of the marina, offered to let me leave her in a slip until Sunday afternoon. But she's just about out of gas and have too many chores... :( Anyway, I broke out the GPS to get some end of the year numbers... :evilb: Test Conditions: 53°F, Sunny, 5-10mph wind from the Southwest, The water was calm with barely a ripple... One person, 1/8 tank of fuel, no mufflers, six pack, and the rest of the crap that has accumulated in the cabin during the year... Upriver (north) 76.6mph @ 4850rpm Downstream 78.4mph @ 4900rpm Those are the best/fastest speeds I have seen since installing my 502. I think the combo of the cold air and removing the mufflers gave her a little extra... :drink: |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Pat, I would be very happy with those numbers !!!! Next year a whipple for you ??????
|
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Good numbers Pat. You have me beat so far. 78.3 is my best. I've never run my boat that low on fuel though. I usually have at least 1/2 tank.
It's supposed to be 68 here today. I want to boat but I have things to do. I think I am going to try to get one more run in and then pack it in for the year. Later this week it's going to be in the high 50's. Who knows after that. |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Numbers sound good Pat! :drink:

The only thing my 502 will get this off season is a new set of Stainless Marine exhaust to replace the set that has sprung a leak... I do have just about everything to build a 500 but it's running too well to mess with For Now... :evilb: How about you? Are you going to turn up the boost? |

Also, the speedo read 84 both directions so I'd average the two GPS numbers for 77.5mph. Still more than 1 mph faster than what I recorded this spring (76.4)... :drink: |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Pat, for sure as soon as warranty is up, and as soon as someone can reflash the ECM, it seems no one is saying to much yet on that subject. Also I hope the XR can handle all that HP. I have read that the XR is really only rated for 600 HP. Perhaps the new merc. mini 6 will be in order.

Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Yesterday, Picked up my new to me , 89 SB 24 w 300 OMC.
Within the first 5 minutes of clearing the channel I had 68 mph @ 5900 Rpm but no GPS yet, Nick was claiming more when I went to meet him w the truck. I'll wait to vote until I have a GPS to back it up. Evan |

Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Gregsz,
Better be more then that. Years ago, Jeff Gerrardi used to get 66-67 out of a 235. You should be seeing 74-75mph. |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Is your motor sitting on the transom ?? Try going up a few holes.

I've only run it for an hour so far. I need a bow lifting prop ao I can use the tabs. It will be there soon. I have total confidence Thanks Evan |

Call Whipple, they can help you make the changes required for 700-800 HP. :evilb: From what I have read, the XR can handle 700HP. At 800HP, well we'll see how Faster makes out. No mini 6, for the $$ for one, you can have 2 or 3 spare Bravo XRs... |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Pat did you hear that as a fact about whipple to help open the 600 all the way ????

No I don't know for sure that Whipple has an upgrade for the Merc. 600. However, the supercharger that Whipple uses is essentially the same as the one on your 600. Like you said, the problem is with the electronics Merc uses, the PCM03 and smart-craft stuff... I have heard that Whipple can reprogram the Merc 496s and now the 525. If they can do the 525, they can do your engine as well. Call Dustin at Whipple, he will give you the straight scoop...\ http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/...ts.asp?CatID=2 |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Thanks Pat I will make all the connections to unleash the rest of the 600's reserve power for next year...............I'm sure that bump will put her in the 90's !!!!!!! I'm still not to sure about the drive though, remember we did an upper gear change this past summer on merc's tab.

Gary, I have blow up or broken so many things over the years that I have now stockpiled spares for just about everything. Last year I pieced together a spare Bravo drive. This year I'll be rebuilding my 454 to have a complete spare engine. We don't have the longest boating season here in the north as you are aware... |
Re: Superboat Speeds ???
Pat you have all the possible problems covered..........thats the way to do it. Perhaps the spare drive is the way to go for me, I do know a couple of guys who do keep spare drives..............Once again this sport is all about fun and $$$$$$$$. :evilb:

Re: Superboat Speeds ???
A Spare Drive Is OK Gary But What U Gunna Do If U Blow The 600 I Bet It would Take a While To Fix That Sucka
