Tell me somebody took some pics?!?!?

It was great seeing everyone.

We made it back. A little nerve racking when you have one engine not feeling to well and some heavier seas.

Here are some phone camera shots of Pete.

jeff...
are you my long lost brother? (not that i really lost one) but, holy cow, how frightening are the similar motor problems and efforts????
i pledge that when we're both up and running, we'll take a long sweet cruise (even if it's october..the 31st is the latest i've been out)
dave, if you're up and running, you can come too..:ernaehrung004:
i'm hoping for block on sat, but will settle for pj.....:argue:..says me to my motor..

They are basically built to carbed pro max specs. The boat was Dean Cusanos old ride.

It ran OK but was stalling and having idle issues. Ran like an animal once in the trottles though.

I figured be safe and have a mechanic look at it before the run though since I was gonna be pushing it.

Well after running in circles I basically have a non running enigine and the boat is back at my place. I just need to retrace the steps, match the other engine for wiring and do some testing of parts, Its gonna be tedious but I think I can get it fixed. I am new to outboards but I have been drag racing cars since 1987 so I Think I have the basic foundation to get it done.(I hope)
I will look at that bearing thanks for any input.
It killed me to miss the get together but I wanted to get this thing back home and get back on track.
Jeff

What your looking for when you pull the flywheel would be any signs of scuffing on the new trigger assembly from the inner hub of the flywheel. If this is happening it will drag the trigger eradically and can also cause a misfire at idle which is when you will get the greatest degree of rock on the crank at low rpms. The other thing that can cause the two surfaces to contact could be from a crack in the casting that holds the top bearing. Good luck, Ive had a lot of outboard experience I think I have now broken at least one of everything.

Well I will check that stuff I hope its not that though.LOL
I am hoping the new stator will help it out. I know the old problem I had was adressed on scream and fly and thats what it was.
Unfortunatley I have this new rev to 2400 condition that no one seems to know what it is. That came from when the mechanic was working on it. It left me in a worse position than where I started. I guess I should have done the work myself.
I am debating wheather I should try another mechanic or if I should continue to learn as I go.
Both options suck.

C, we definately have the same "thing" going on. I am not sure what it is but we have it!!LOL

My last O/B that suddenly decided to idle above 2000 rpm blew up shortly after that. I believe it was a carb problem that leaned it out, but I never did get the full story on it from the mechanic. Proceed with caution.

Thanks sutphil, Believe me I will.
These outboards are finicky from what I hear. I don't want to lose one this early in the game.
The engine tests perfect on compression too. Only 84 HRs on the power head on this one.

30ctsutphen 07-16-2008 01:48 AM

Well I had a good merc mechanic look at it today.

Its back up and running. seems it was an assortment of small mistakes the other mechanic made that totalled a big problem but most are sorted out right now.

Looks like a bad seal at the carb to base gasket, A dry rotted and leaking bleed line on the carb, and a badly sync'd carb to timing event, these issues together could have spelled trouble. Luckily it was never run under load, or run for more than a couple of seconds on the hose.

I need to get new base gaskets and some silicone tubing and I'll be back in business.
It runs real nice again just with the proper timing events and the sync ironed out on the carbs and timing
I feel alot better hearing it idle down properly.
Stator was good switch boxes were good and the trigger was good. Unfortunately the other guy had me buy both a stator and a trigger.Ugg there goes $500.00 for nothing!

Hope you get back together soon C, If you need a good mechanic I know one.
He was very reasonable too.

James Gang 07-16-2008 12:00 PM

Glad to hear your back in action. I would double check that timing again though. You had stated that it was jumping around all over the place without any throttle linkage imput and that shouldn't be.

ChristianGott 07-16-2008 07:44 PM

jeff...
that's ...great!!!
i'm trading my old trailer to a good friend's brother-in-law for some time looking at the motor....he does it all...from helicoptors at sikorsky... to ob's...to john deeres..
if i'm not 100% by friday nite, i'm scuttling the fokker...
