The heads are 77-85 open chamber small valve heads 76 cc chambers combine that with a full dish piston you are probably running around 8 to 1 compression the caps are just a plain cast iron cap. from the looks of the rust on the center 2 cylinders the exhaust is probably leaking back into the engine. This was probably a car or pickup engine which will work but the heads will not flow enough at 5000 rpms to work well. This is a twin engine boat right? Is this what you have times 2. Are all the heads/ pistons/blocks the same. The pics of the inside of the engine show all the parts to have a coating of burnt oil on them. this usually doesnt happen to marine engines due to the engines running so cold with constant cold water flowing thru the engine. 140 to 160 degrees. If everything needs to go to the machine shop it will cost the same as doing it with good marine stuff. Start with good marine quality cores. i can help you out with some parts but dont have enough for twins. You can buy these for less than it will take to machine what you have.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVR...ssoriesQ5fGear

Does anyone know the rotation of the starter that these engines need? I have been doing some reading and i see both CW and CCW rotation.

Scorpion Paul 12-27-2009 10:43 PM

The engines are clockwise or righthand rotation measured at the flywheel. Hows the engines going? been quiet thru the holidays.

Yeah havent had much time to work on it lately. Got the block cleaned and painted last night. Ill post some pics soon.

I can donate a set of 64cc L98 (300hp) heads that you can just bolt on that came off an engine that had low hours I replaced em with new darts. They will work much better than what you have. I have no use for them maybe just a set of new valve seals for good measure. i have some good rods as well, Im going new with my engines. So if you need to save a buck let me know.

Just a little update for you guys. got the crank, rods and pistons to the machine shop to be ground .010 under. the guy at the shop said that the crank is in good shape. It is also a forged crank.

Paul, Thanks for the offer for the heads but for now i think im going to use what i have, unless you have two pair.

do any of you guys have part washers out there? what type of fluid do you use in it? simple green, Kerosene? a combination of something?

You Can Get The Fluid from Napa Or Pep Boys In 5 Gal Pails I Have A Nice Little Table Top One. Works Great

Well heres the deal with the heads I have 2 sets exactly the same with 1 exception in the 90s GM changed the angle on the 2 center bolt holes where the intake bolts up. The 88 model year I have the bolt holes on the center 2 holes are straight thread and the 95 model year set the center 2 are angled. many people run a drill through the intake manifold and angle out the center 2 holes. If you think it will work for you you can have them. They are in great shape. They are 300 hp heads and will give you the flow you need. What did you end up running for pistons?
