Ok, so what supports the rear of the engine? The transmission is removed so that creates a gap between the bell housing and the transom assembly. What takes up the gap and secures the 2 together?

A rear engine plate. Guess you really are a rookie lol its quite simple.

Most boats with transmissions have a rear plate. I can see in your case you do not. Rear plate goes between block/ bellhousing. Bolt up angle irons to stringers and it all bolts up just like front plate. HOPE this helps.
